Acerca de esta escucha

Based on a true story originally written by one of the survivors, Neta Lohnes Frazier's account of seven children traveling westward still has the power to astonish. In the 1840s, the Sager family set off on the Oregon Trail, a dangerous and adventure-filled journey.

Tragedy struck when both the mother and father succumbed to fever, orphaning the youngsters - one just a newborn. The entire wagon train adopted them, until they arrived at the Whitman Mission in Oregon. There, the Sagers settled into an ordinary life...until the day of an Indian massacre. The bravery of the Stouthearted Seven will amaze today's young listeners.

Absolutely Wonderful Book

Got a lot of cleaning done, couldn't stop the story. Replayed the gripping parts to others in my family just so they, too, could appreciate the struggle of those pioneers traveling to Oregon, and the importance of family.

Moving Telling

Very good read, can’t wait to reread the original book that my family was given by Katherine’s grand daughter.

Stout hearted!

The narrator mis pronounced many names of the locations, which made it tough to listen to soccer we are local & know the correct pronunciation. I Loved the book anyway!

Great story, loved learning the history

full of accurate historical detail. me, my husband, and both of our older daughters cried many times during this narrative. gave us a deep appreciation for what pioneers of the time endured.

tearful and truthful

The Whitman Massacre and the Sager children are topics familiar to those of us in Washington state. This book was well written and well researched. Whoever chose this reader might try another job. He/she isn't ready for this one. The reader's voice was pleasing. His pacing was not. It was choppy and hard to listen to. And PLEASE, when you read a book about a particular area, learn to pronounce the names of locations in that area. Every time I heard Oreegone, Uhmatilla, Willuhmette, it was jarring. This book could have been so much better. I listened all the way through only to hear the story. I will carefully avoid another book read by this narrator.

A good story poorly executed.

Would you try another book from Neta Lohnes Frazier and/or Roscoe Orman?

yes, it was a good story,

If you’ve listened to books by Neta Lohnes Frazier before, how does this one compare?

first book

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His deep manly voice did not represent the main, young female character. I kept listening to his voice, not the story. very distracting. I think a young girl would have been more appropriate.

good story...wrong narrator

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

It would've been fantastic if the performance included the correct pronunciation of Oregon and Willamette Valley. As a teacher in Oregon, very frustrating to play for my students to hear the awkwardness over and over again.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Correct pronunciation of Oregon.

Frustrating
