Resumen del Editor

For twenty years, Candice DeLong was on the front lines of some of the FBI's most memorable and gripping cases. Some have called her a real life Clarice Starling and a female Donnie Brasco. She has tailed terrorists, gone undercover as a gangster's moll, and was one of the agents chosen to carry out the manhunt for the Unabomber in Montana. Now, for the first time, she reveals the dangers and rewards of her career as a field profiler in the FBI - the world's most powerful law enforcement agency.

Now retired, Agent DeLong offers a "day-in-the-life" glimpse of her work. Field profiling - pioneered by John Douglas and Roy Hazelwood, who trained Agent DeLong - is one of the most fascinating and challenging branches of the FBI. She traces the unusual career path that led her to crime fighting, and recounts the obstacles she faced as a woman and as a fledgling agent.

DeLong takes listeners step by step through the profiling process and shows how she helped solve several incredible cases. The story of her role investigating leads on the notorious Tylenol Murderer case is utterly compelling. And, she gives a true, behind-the-scene insider's account of the efforts leading to the arrest of the Unabomber, including the media interference that nearly botched the case.

A remarkable portrait of courage and grace under fire, Special Agent fills a missing chapter in the annals of law enforcement literature and provides a dramatic and often funny portrait of an extraordinary woman who has dedicated her heart and soul to the crusade against crime.

Love me some Candy! #badass

I thoroughly enjoy DeLong on Investigation Discovery and am subscribed to her podcast. Listening to this made me respect and love her even more.
When I began listening to her stories on ID, I thought she may have been playing it up for the cameras, especially with her quippy one liners. However, this book proved me wrong. Not only do her one liners appear unexpectedly, but at the perfect time!
She was also very much involved and instrumental in huge cases that are merely mentioned in the list of her credentials on ID. DeLong's experience in paving the way for women in the FBI prove her to be an expert in the fields of murder, mayhem, profiling, awareness, and, most interesting, undercover work.

Great Storytelling

Candice has a gift for being a Nurse, an FBI agent, and also as a great orator. I was listening to her Podcast “Killer Psyche,” and I thought her voice was clear and that her analyses on high profile crimes were interesting. I wanted more content, and luckily, I found this audio book. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in True Crime and wants to hear stories right from the agent.

Over before you know it

I really like this rendition of DeLongs career. She gave a good overview of her struggles being a woman within a male dominated organization without overly focusing on it. Also, the cases she choose to discuss were relevant even fifteen years later after publication. She manages to convey interesting information and advice without being heavy handed. Many books of this ilk tend to be self-serving and credit-grabbing. I liked hearing how she played a part in the teams and how those teams became successful. Also, her discussion about how she almost lost her pension based upon her moonlighting was a bit discomforting. I am glad the FBI has embraced diversity.

I would have liked a little more color of what happened to some of the supporting agents like Ice woman. Also, perhaps a little more color on how the Bureau is changing and it appears from her work for the better. She narrated the book, I found the narration to be helpful as she added emphasis that was instrumental. If you are interested in the FBI, she offers a perspective that I recommend you listen -- it will be fast listen.

Fascinating - Did Not Want It to End

Written with humor and grace, it is a treat to hear the author, Candace DeLong read her own book in her own voice - one can hear her sensitivity, intelligence and wit. These traits, along with discipline and a high energy level caused her to be a success in her initial career as the head nurse of a psychiatric ward, which in turn prepared her to be one of the first profilers at the FBI. Woven among the entertaining vignettes of rescuing a boy who was victimized by a child molester; capturing Ted Kazinski (the Unabomber), tracking down drug traffickers, infiltrating the mob, capturing a killer, recovering stolen government property -- are the threads of her life as a single parent. One of her responsibilities at the FBI was giving talks on how we can improve our personal security -- the advice in this last chapter alone would justify selecting this book. I could have listened to her much longer - and wish that the book had not been abridged. She has some spirit and some spunk and was probably fun to work with - but she also had discipline and intelligence that caused her to be selected for some of the most challenging and dangerous FBI assignments. An accomplished public speaker, her clear delivery of the book she wrote was a treat to listen to...I highly recommend this book.
