Resumen del Editor

An instant New York Times best seller!

Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are back in the next Lynley novel from number one New York Times best-selling author Elizabeth George.

When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. They must sort through the lies and the secret lives of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another.

Another stunning Elizabeth George novel

I’ve read or listened to nearly all George novels and always enjoy them. They are relevant, interesting, well-written and thoughtful. I love her depth of characterization and am always a bit sad to leave Lynley, Havers, and Nkarta at the end. The subject matter of female genital mutilation is hard, but George handles it skillfully and with sensitivity.

Something to Hide

I learned quite a bit while reading this book—I won’t give it away. Only I’ll say that it inconceivable the things humans do to one another, and that applies especially to what is done to females. I congratulate the author for shining the light on this despicable practice. We can only do better when we know better.

FGM

The book is very good source of information about the problem of FGM still existing in modern Western society.

Not my favorite Elizabeth George book but good

This story is about a difficult subject and in the beginning of the book I was a little confused and sometimes bored. Linley and Havers came into the story about a third of the way through and I wanted them sooner. But the story has a lot of twists and turns and the characters are quite interesting so in the end I enjoyed the book inspite of my feelings about the slow beginning.

Satisfying in so many ways

I was happy to see this newest Lynsey/Havers novel. From the way the story started to the humor supplied by Barb Havers to the promise of something in the next novel, I was glad to see that the author continues this saga. The narrator is just brilliant!

Absorbing

I read an Elizabeth George Thomas Lynley/ Barbara Havers novel to spend time with the characters and inhabit their world for awhile, as well as to appreciate the language and writing. This book delivers on all counts and especially includes Deborah and Nkata in major roles. The devastating consequences of FGM are a significant part of the story, and are part of the even larger issue of female identity. The plot develops along with our knowledge of the characters and keeps twisting right to the end. i looked forward to listening a bit more each evening, longer on the weekends, and was sorry to reach the end. Simon Vance was phenomenal as the narrator, expressing a range of voices, make and female, English and Nigerian. Very well done.

An incredible story

…About something I was unaware of. After researching the subject I realized the story did not exaggerate. Elizabeth George managed to expose facets of perception about this subject by writing an incredible tale with richly interesting characters. With social issues one can be quick to make an assumption and an opinion. But a problem has many sides. And while there are certain things that no one can deny, it is good to understand how a problem came to be and how people who live with it may not have appropriate coin to see or appreciate all sides . Enjoyed the book thoroughly. Of course Lyndley, Havers Nkata, Simon, & Deb all played their wonderful parts.

Keep going

At times, this story was hard to follow. By the end though it wove together and captured the minds eye.

Interesting, unbelievable, a bit preachy

The book was generally interesting and fairly compelling, with an interesting mystery to solve.

However, it seemed unnecessarily complex (and long), and the reactions of the characters were sometimes unrealistic.

The book was also, at times, rather preachy on multiple points. This tended to make it expound at length or have one or more characters lecture.
