An Instant New York Times Bestseller!
Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are back in the next Lynley novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George.
When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. They must sort through the lies and the secret lives of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another.

Now into Keldale's pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside.

As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Guido Brunetti, a native Venetian, sets out to unravel the mystery behind the high-profile murder. To do so, he calls on his knowledge of Venice, its culture, and its dirty politics. The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

What a story!
First off, I want to say, stick with it! I found things a little confusing at the beginning as all the characters and story lines are being introduced. ( I sometimes find this difficult with an audio book when you can’t just look back through the pages for clarification)
This book tackles a sensitive subject. And while the story captures the listener’s attention in a well crafted mystery, it also leaves you with a lot to think about. In my view, a perfect book!
Simon Vance is one of a few male narrators who moves between male and female voices with ease. A fabulous job well done. I highly recommend this book.

FGM —this is not a new rock band!
FGM (female genitalia mutilation)) is a serious issue and it really lives under the radar primarily in immigrant communities…. The victims are female babies, girls —practiced by women to keep their victims “pure”
This book explores this issue and from my splint of view is very informative. Highly recommend.

Mixed feelings
First, while the length of this book didn't bother me, there were an awful lot of characters to sort out in the beginning. I think that the confusion that I felt, trying to keep them all straight, might have been alleviated if one would have read the book instead of listened. It does eventually come together in the end, but it was a struggle to keep track of everyone and their stories.
Second, ugh. The author spends the ENTIRE book making everyone white apologize for being so (as if they could help what they are born as, same as African Americans can't help it). I believe that, in order for their to be less racism, we need to have more connection between human beings, and less SEPARATION. But the author has people of color saying things like "Well, do you really want to stay at the white person's house? We can find somewhere more acceptable for you...with someone of color. " Instead of noting that the white couple is trying to show kindness, regardless of skin color. And if white people feel apologetic for being white (as they do the whole way through) what good does that actually do for people of color? Ridiculous logic.
Next, there's a few graphic sex scenes, totally gratuitous. And frankly, just some crude, again unnecessary, talk. Fortunately, the worst of this is in the beginning. Also terrible language, but not constant.
Now the better parts. E.G. is a great storyteller, otherwise. And she kept me guessing until the end! I really enjoyed some of the characters, and felt like they were friends by the end. I especially enjoy her sense of humor, which has a way of sneaking up on you.
I appreciate the education about FGM, and how this book helps to raise awareness about the subject.
The narration was great.

A difficult topic handled well
I'd grown quite weary with Lynley's constant misery. Thus, it was refreshing to have Deborah St. James and Winston Nkata as lead characters. Tough subject, but one more people should know about. George's research is apparent and I applaud her for her courage. I almost always enjoy her writing.
