I 1896 flygtede fire englændere med deres bytte, en formue i uslebne diamanter, gennem den nådesløse Kalahari-ørken, stærkt forfulgt af en afrikansk stamme. Det lykkedes de fire mænd at komme om bord på det ventende HMS Rove, men en storm blæste op, og skibet forsvandt med alle ombordværende.
Juan Cabrillo og hans besætning på det ombyggede fragtskib, Oregon, er med nød og næppe sluppet helskindet fra en mission på Congo-floden, da de opfanger et nødkald fra et skib, der er kommet under beskydning ud for den afrikanske kyst. Cabrillo kommer den smukke Sloane Macintyre til undsætning og erfarer bagefter, at hun var på skattejagt og håbede at finde det forsvundne skib med dets last af diamanter.
