Resumen del Editor

Threats against a televangelist lead Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin into a murder case in this “brisk and beguiling page-turner” (Publishers Weekly).

Staten Island would be forgettable were it not for the gleaming Tabernacle of the Silver Spire, where thousands of congregants come every Sunday to hear the sermons of Barnabas Bay. Millions more tune in on television, giving the good Reverend international fame, and a chance to spread the gospel from New York City’s harbor all the way to South Korea. But threatening notes have been appearing in the collection bag, suggesting that one of the faithful has decided it’s time this good shepherd get the hook.

Believing organized religion is nothing more than a scam, rotund sleuth Nero Wolfe refuses to investigate the threats, instead recommending veteran investigator Fred Durkin for the case. But when Durkin is accused of murdering the Reverend’s assistant, Wolfe fights to clear his name. He may not be a Christian, but he will always help a brother in need.

As always, an excellent mystery.

I discovered the Nero Wolf mystery series recently while reading Nelson DeMille’s “The Maze” as the character John Corey was reading it in that story. I like when authors refer to other books in their books. It feels like a treasure hunt. Stephen King does it splendidly in many of his books, and especially in the movie””Mr. Harrigan’s Phone” which I enjoyed Very Much. Now I am hooked on Nero Wolf stories and my favorite narrator for them is L. J. Ganser. 😊 Thank you for an excellent performance.

Enjoyable as always……but

I enjoy these books and LJ Gansor does a great job narrating but after a while it seems like Goldsborough uses the same template for every story. The same characters interact the same way all the time. The same habits portrayed; the same dialogue. Similar storylines. Similar plot. Reading them takes little brain power. One glaring error in this one is when Durkin is explaining the crime scene and tells how he saw his gun on the floor along with 2 shell casings. His gun is a revolver. It doesn’t eject the shell. Someone should have caught that.

More Archie & Nero Fun...

Yes, it's a bit trite and predictable, however it's an entertaining and and worthy listen for sure. Certainly not Shakespeare, nor is intended to be so high brow. It's quick-paced, no blood and guts keep your interest story telling. AND the narration is spot-on terrific. No Pulitzers to be awarded here, just engaging entertaining Tales. A tribute to Rex Stout's originals for sure.
