Nachdem Felix Jäger auf der Flucht vor der Obrigkeit die Stadt Altdorf hastig verlassen musste, schwor er dem Zwerg Gotrek Gurnisson einen Eid, dessen Todessaga niederzuschreiben. Bei Tageslicht besehen bewahrheiten sich dann Felix' schlimmste Befürchtungen, denn er erfährt, dass Gotrek ein sogenannter Slayer ist - ein Zwerg, der dazu verdammt ist, einen heroischen Tod im Kampf zu suchen, um für Schande zu büßen, die er über sich gebracht hat. Ihre Reisen verwickeln sie in ein außergewöhnliches Abenteuer nach dem anderen, während denen Felix verzweifelt versucht, das Schicksal seines Gefährten nicht teilen zu müssen.
