Great story and good narration

Book has a great storyline. The narrator brought the characters to life and made the book enjoyable. Really enjoyed the book as a ebook and this audiobook made it even better. The characters really came out more to me through the audio book and I connected more.

Tightly woven & well-written, enjoyable listen

Scared Shiftless (The Legend of Nyx #1), my fifth read from author Theophilus Monroe, and my first in a new series. Well written & enjoyable read, very different from his Voodoo Legacy Series. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Kasey Logan's narration sets a different tone for this series & adds to the enjoyment of the book. I look forward to the next book in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Scared Shiftless (The Legend of Nyx Book 1)

Nyx, a water elemental, has prowled the water for centuries, hunting, becoming what her prey found desirable. Then drew them underwater to their deaths and her sustenance. After she tried to catch a Vampire, she was bitten. Now because the Vampire got away and she could no longer shift form, she is trapped in the body of a man and has to live as a trans-woman to be true to herself.
She has learnt to eat human food, hold down a job and make friends with the humans she used to eat. In her spare time, she is a Vampire Hunter, on the hunt for Alice, the Vamp that has stolen her abilities. Once she finds her and eats her heart, the hunt would be complete, and she could go back to her life as an elemental in the river.
She teams up with Vamp Wolfgang, and Brucy, her sprite conscience to find Alice the Vampire who should have been Nyx’s meal.
The book has a good plot and some humorous parts. And the narrator did the characters justice.
However, this is an LGBTQ book. So If you are LGBTQ or LGBTQ friendly, this will be the book for you; otherwise, pick something else.

want spunky bounty hunting, listen to Nyx!

A unique spin on the paranormal and elemental magic with bounty hunting spunk! The author links a storyline that delves in deeper to connection of belonging/self-love that many can relate to. The narrator does a pretty good job with the various voices, though there were mild shifts in quality from chapter to chapter. Interested in listening to the next book in Nyx series!

I enjoyed this story. Nyx was an interesting character & now I am hooked. Nyx is stuck in the last form she shifted to. She was going to feed on a vampire but he bit her instead, stealing her shifting abilities. Now she is a man who sings in a club by day and hunts vampires at night looking for the one who stole her abilities. A great read.

Not Your Typical Vampire Hunter!

Great start to the series and a fun audio to listen to!
I really enjoyed Scared Shiftless and getting to see more of Nyx! Fun and interesting story that definitely kept my attention!
Looking forward to more!!

Engaging Vampire Hunter Fantasy

I enjoyed this unusual vampire hunter story. Theophilus Monroe wrote a creative tale in which a paranormal being started to hunt vampires in order to find the vampire that stole her ability. The characters were complicated and unique. The tale had twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Kasey Logan's narration was good and kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

A refreshing take on vampire genre

Scared Shiftless is the tale of Nyx, aka Nicky, a vampire hunter with a unique background - she is a water elemental. Nicky was bitten by a vampire who stole her elemental ability to shapeshift, which has kept her from being able to return to her watery home and has trapped her into a seemingly human existence - in a seemingly human male body.

A pivotal element of Nicky's character is that she identifies as a trans woman. Previous to her human existence, Nicky did not have a concept of gender at all, but living as a human she discovered she favors the traditionally feminine things, despite being trapped in a male body. This causes difficulties and judgements against her that she does not understand until she befriends a trans woman who, mistaking her for the same, explains what it is to be trans, which Nicky embraces.

The writer appears to have a good grasp of the struggles and realities that occur within the trans community and this book goes a long way in explaining those struggles to outsiders. If I had one complaint about this book, it is that occasionally these explanations become like lectures, diverting too far from the core story for too long. That was really my only issue with this book - I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.

This story world is wonderfully developed and has plenty of familiar vampire concepts. If you are a fan of the shows The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, you will enjoy this book for similarity in ideas.

The narrator has an emotive, lively voice, and is capable of keeping the listener interested. Scared Shiftless is the first audiobook in a while that I can truly say I thoroughly enjoyed listening to from beginning to end. I was engaged throughout the whole thing and did not have to rewind and replay bits because I got bored and tuned out.

Great Series Starter

While I thought this was a great start to a new series, I could have done without the social justice messages since that pulled me out of the story and made it less enjoyable to read.

Kasey Logan, the narrator, did a great job of bringing the story to life.
