Edward Snowden is experiencing the irony of the whistleblower: a man who released vast troves of secret information and has had his own story redacted. What has been reported on Snowden until now has focused primarily on the damage the American government believes he has done to the intelligence community. But his own message has largely gone unreported. While his generation overwhelmingly supports his actions, they rarely read newspapers, magazines or watch network TV news - and they're missing the core of his philosophy. This audiobook wraps up the Snowden doctrine into one single source - short, to the point, and as provocative as you'd imagine.

A story of a man who felt that his country was acting badly as well as outside the law and risked everything to tell the world about it. In Snowden's own words he reveals what motivated him to act in a way that may eventually land him in prison. At best he will undoubtedly spend the prime of his life in exile. There are much longer selections dealing with Snowden and the actions he took but this one was a good way to begin learning about the man behind the headlines.

Saints and Dragons: Edward Snowden in His Own Words was not written in Snowden's own words. Instead, the book is a compilation of information gathered from Glenn Greenwald's No Place to Hide and other sources. Snowden's "own words" are a strung together series of quotes by Snowden obtained from many printed interviews. The author even cites Wikipedia as a source of some quotes.

The only new thought in this book was the comparison of Snowden to the legend of St. George slaying the dragon, which was weak at best.

Skip this book, listen/read the original instead. Read Glenn Greenwald's No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State. Outside of media interviews, this is the only book to date that Snowden actually had first-hand contact with the authors.
