Acerca de esta escucha

Challenged by an expert who said it couldn’t be done, Joshua Slocum, a fearless New England sea captain, set out in April 1895 to prove that a man could sail alone around the world. A little over three years and forty-six thousand miles later, the proof was complete. This is Slocum’s own account of his remarkable adventures during the historic voyage of the Spray.

Whether Slocum was more accomplished as a writer or sailor is hard to say. His writing style is fast paced, witty, and exhilarating, an absorbing match to his harrowing adventures - adventures that included being chased by Moorish pirates off Gibraltar; escaping a fleet of hostile canoes; being submerged by a great wave off the Patagonian coast; an encounter with Black Pedro, “the worst murderer in Tierra del Fuego”; and foiling a nocturnal attack by savages by strewing carpet tacks on the Spray’s deck.

Captain Joshua Slocum (1844–1909) was the first person to circle the globe alone entirely by sea. This remarkable achievement made Slocum the most famous North American sailor of all time.

in late 19th century. I got it as a sailing book and the writing on sailing is amazing but descriptions of his reception and encounters on shore are what makes this an unique book

Fascinating portrait of the world

Story and narration were complementary.
A gentle and skilled writer and a gentle and skilled reader. I found it surprisingly soothing and felt I was in for good throughout. I‘ll listen again.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

The story is interesting but one needs a chart to follow his trip and a schematic of the Spray to understand the sailing terminology.

interesting story of adventure

Any sailor, anyone seeking an adventurous tale for that matter, will love this book.

Slocum has a keen wit and speaks in enough detail to keep the experienced sailor satisfied while not boring not overwhelming the novice at sea.

This is a MUST READ

For a man who denys his writing ability, Mr. Sloakem does a fantastic job of coloring life on a high-seas voyage with a spirit of realism and adventure.

An excellent voyage by a great writer.

The modest captain details an account of perseverance in the face of the majesty of our Earth and the general hospitality of those he encounters..

Pluck and luck see him through.

Quite a tale of adventure

You are there. Feel the sea breeze, hear the waves against the hull, taste the sea air. I will read / listen again and again some more when I need to escape.

I reminded me some of Neville Shute's stories. A guy buckles down and slowly and surely gets the job done, in this case, sailing alone around the world. No brag, just fact. I enjoyed it.
The narration does sound a little like it was recorded in a can, but narrator is good.

well worth a credit

An amazing tale, told in an inimitable style. When Joshua Slocum set out to sail alone around the world it was not considered possible. He did the impossible, on many occasions narrowly escaping death thanks to his deep skill set, his pluck, and his luck. Then he again achieved the impossible by telling the tale beautifully, in an engaging, clear, and original style reminiscent of Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson. He deserves to be celebrated for both achievements — the doing and the telling — as long as the English language is spoken. On top of this, it is a tale of rebirth, redemption, and the kindness of strangers. Slocum was on the junk heap of history, a captain of merchant sailing ships when the sail had been eclipsed by the steam engine. Almost accidentally he found himself building himself a beautiful little sloop, to the amusement of passers by, and then to their further amusement came up with an audacious and potentially suicidal idea of what to do with the boat. And he lived to tell the tale.
