These short stories are derived from my parents’ memories shared with me. Although I did not live through the Second World War, I think I gained an idea of what life was like for my parents during that time. This book is an attempt to pass on my understanding of their experiences. Details of the stories have been recreated to the best of my memory, but are often creatively enhanced, and fictitious characters have been included to support the telling of my parents’ stories. My intention is not to specifically describe my parents; as their stories unfold, I hope the listener gains insight into their lives, and the situations people had to face during war time. The stories are in chronological order.

As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.
