No ammunition') to the landing at Algiers in 1943 ('I closed my eyes and faced the sun. I fell down a hatchway').

Filled with bathos, pathos and gales of ribald laughter, this is a barely sane helping of military goonery and superlative Milliganese.

An absolute classic

Normal life described in an extraordinary way. Truth is stranger than fiction. The fact Spike is narrating his own experiences makes it all the more special. He knows what’s coming and starts to giggle. A real life Flashman, living for the moment and life’s simple pleasures - women, wine, music and good company.

Beautiful Spike

How wonderful to have one of Spikes best known books read by himself. It can't get better than that. He wrote in a conversational style - his style, so to have him read it is a good match. He is my favourite nut of all, bar none.

Great storytelling of his time in the army, up until his arrival in North Africa and the real war.

Loved it

As well as being sublimely funny he was so descriptive that I felt I could see it. Wonderful and I shall listen again soon.

Typical Spike funny

Full of little word plays and laughs. Quite funny but spoken too quickly by Spike.
