Resumen del Editor

Ten thousand stars, once chained, taste freedom. An eternal empire, once undefeated, falls to pieces. An alliance, once united, now lacks a common foe. War was hard enough. Peace may be impossible.

For 17 years, Colonel Henry Wong and the United Planets Space Force have fought the Kenmiri Empire. They drove the alien overlords back from humanity's borders into their own stars and found allies among the Kenmiri's slaves and subjects.

Now the war is over. A great Gathering has been called of the allies who fought the war, but they only ever shared a common enemy. With the Kenmiri in retreat, a thousand new agendas are revealed.

The United Planets Alliance wants peace above all else. Their allies want everything from new homes to new empires - and all too many of them are prepared to do anything to achieve their goals!

It was okay

It was okay. I felt like I came into the story in the second act. The whole destroyer thing and all. Also, the “he’s not my type” and “he’s my ex” didn’t seem to add anything but wokeness. I will probably purchase book 2.

Great Military Sci-fi!

I enjoyed Glenn Stewart's Exile books and decided to try this series. Stewart has a great grasp of the science of space travel and weaponry, but what distinguishes him in my mind is his willingness to use diverse, non-traditional protagonists. He also has a very creative knack for developing zenospecies, which adds a lot of spice to sci-fi. Oliver Wyman is a gifted narrator as well!

Narrator ruined a decent story

The story is decent, not amazing, but worth my time. The narrator's breathy exaggerated movie guy voice was just annoying.

An anomaly for this author.

Normally, when I read a book by Glynn Stewart I expect original characters and locations with a lot of action and excellent writing. This had some interesting locations and the characters were ok, but I never really “liked” anyone. If you have read any of the dozens of “collapsing empire” space operas out there, you probably already have an idea of 80% of the book. Is it entertaining? probably. Is Glynn Stewart still awesome? Definitely. Is he trying to highlight LGBQ culture in this book in the most politically correct possible way? Yes. Does it really affect the plot? No. My only complaint is that being gay is not really interesting enough by itself to give a character depth. I admire the open mindedness, but it isn’t enough to make an “ok” book as exceptional as we have come to expect from this author

Typical space opera

Not a bad story but nothing too original. The main character, Col. Henry Wong, is not a James T. Kirk, that's for sure, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The narrator did a good job and the story was easy to listen to.

Excellent!

OMG! Great narration and great story. I was crying at the end, and look forward to listening to the rest of the adventures.

A surprisingly good find.

I'm not going to lie the gay marriage was a turn off but the author did a very good job and I recommend this anyone.

Very Enjoyable Listen.

This is definitely military Sci Fi with enough space battles, inspiring speeches, and firm jaws with cleft chins to keep anyone happy. However there is a little more depth to the political and sociological elements than I have conventionally found in this genre which is refreshing. The characters are appealing, but a little simplistic. The plot is complex enough to be quite interesting. Overall, this is a very enjoyable book.

Took forever to get going

I feel asleep during the first few chapters due to the lack of excitement. Things got a bit better, but still was a tough slog.

Space opera with both action and ethics ...

I'm not a fan of non-stop blow them up action ... I'm more of an Asimov and Bujold science fiction type ... so that should give you a frame of reference. However, this novel certainly does have action -- interstellar warfare, nuclear weapons, treachery, balanced with diplomacy and a very likeable main character, the captain of a warship, who is dealing successfully throughout the book with the flashbacks caused by his PTSD from previous combat experiences on a horrific level.

I want to emphasize how easy it is to like the main characters in this book ... they are all fleshed out personalities, and the psychological typecasting is impeccable. The motivations and actions spring from the personalities in perfectly believable sequences, this book has depth; it's easy to sink into the story and believe you're seeing it happen in real time before you.

This was my first experience with the narrator, and I admit to being starstruck. I lost count of the number of accents, genders, and extraterrestrial voices he accomplished fluidly, repeatedly, and with apparent ease.

I'm beyond picky in the action-oriented books I'll tolerate, but this one goes immediately in my top five in its genre, in my life list of reading sci-fi, and that list spans over 65 years ... so, hopefully that tells you that this is one very impressive book. I was hooked from the beginning, as it was quickly apparent that the main character had ethics and morals that caused him to consider all options before simply killing whatever was in his way. That quality is sorely missing from most of the sci-fi I've been running across lately, and it was like finding fresh air to read this book. I'm delighted it's the start of a series.
