Acerca de esta escucha

Written by two professionals who have "been there and done that" with their own sons with ADHD, Raising Boys with ADHD empowers parents to help their sons with ADHD find success in school and beyond. The book covers topics not often found in other parenting guides, such as the preschool years, early diagnosis and strategies for teens transitioning to work and college. Filled with practical knowledge, resources, and tools needed to help parents address the many strengths and challenges of boys with ADHD, this book provides parents with encouragement and hope for the future.

I thought this was a good quick read, had some good ideas and strategies for supporting my son.

Good Read

To me and with my personal experience as a person and a parent, this book has many contradictions and caveats. Most of the parenting advice is universal regardless of any quantifiable mental disorder your child may have. It is good advice but not specific to ADHD. One of the main contradictions has to do with establishing "rules" with an unruly child. One of the others is the expectation of having no expectations. This book goes against the old Buddhist adage of " prepare the Child for the road, do not try to prepare the road for the Child." The most helpful part of the book is to try to delineate what specific thought processes the child has. ODD, oppositional defiant disorder, seems to be closer to a diagnosable problem to be fixed as opposed to ADHD. If you can maintain parental authority and teach your child methods, systems, and processes ADHD is simply just part of the parent practice. If you cannot maintain parental authority then the whole book is moot. This book is a good read for new parents that can establish early attention to any child. This book is little help to parents of a high school kid trying to help direct that life.

If you don’t know anything about ADHD and boys this will be a great read. It gives details on many items like medicine and myths about it. It gives information on methods to help parents cope in a general way. It gives you a holistic view of what you might be going through or what to expect.

Great information if you don’t have a clue about ADHD

Our son 8 was recently diagnosed with ADHD and other than searching the internet this book has given us a lot of information to think about. Things felt overwhelming when listening to everything from Middle School on but I like that the book mentioned coping mechanisms (not the word used) and ways to implement effective change. We are new to 504 Plan and now I have ideas to go back and discuss with the team. I plan to get this book in hard copy so I can make notes and read it again. This will help us to be better advocates for our child.

What recommendations do you have to get the other parent to listen also and change unproductive ways.

Thank you for consolidating this knowledge for those in need.

This book is a description of different behaviors and characteristics of boys with ADHD and, sometimes, more resources for helping parents of boys with ADHD. I did not find that it included very many tips or ideas or suggestions on how to help raise boys with ADHD or how to best interact with them or how to best help them learn life skills for being part of society. Instead, it was a description of what we as parents deal with - I already know that!

Nothing substantive
