In this riveting memoir, Lawrence Youngblood chronicles his life's journey in the grim ghetto of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is a story about how a dysfunctional home and the mean streets of uptown tainted the life of a child. No one is born into the world with the mental inception that they want to be bad or a gangsta or criminal. As human beings we are born in total innocence, but in this case, a young boy's environment shaped who he was to become. Trapped by both his demons and those of his parents', he's led down a dark path that he wouldn't have otherwise chosen for himself. The harsh reality that came to be known would deter him as he embraced the vicious surroundings and became the cliché : "A product of my environment".
Lawrence's story starts from a kid battling emotional and hidden mental issues to bouts with substance abuse to the grim streets, absconding from a mental institution, and ultimately, numerous arrests, and prison terms. Anyone who listens to this audiobook will truly understand the struggle of inner city youth and Black males all over America.
This memoir is a true account of what it is like being Black and raised in the violent slums of New Orleans and cities like it all over the America. Embrace his darkness and light, joy and pain, and success and failures, one is sure to feel every emotion, and horrifying moment.
