Historic Years. of the Dust Bowl

Educational and enjoyable time, listening to a fine story by Jennifer McMurrain and good performance of Quail Crossing, by Lia Fredrick. Set in Texas during the despair from the Dust Bowl of the 1930's, Jennifer McMurrain creates a story of poverty, romance and gratefulness. Four abandoned children left to fend for themselves in Texas are taken in by by a desperate farmer, Jim and his recently widowed daughter, Dovie, who is grieving the loss of both her daughter and husband. The oldest kid, Bill, is 18. He along with his two sisters and little brother are willing to work for room and board. The story winds around the boys falling in love, sister Evelyn, who does everything she can to have her family rejected, because she wants to follow her parents to California and little Alice falling in love with everyone and everything about their new home and family. The story references Christianity often, as an imbedded culture in the panhandle of Texas. It's a clean, sweet story that's hard to find any negatives about. Each of the six main characters are fully developed by the author and they each have unique personalities. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series.

I really loved this book! It is a historic novel about the hard times during the dust bowl in our American past.

In Knollwood, Texas in the 1930s, Dovie Grant, living on the farm with her father and mourning the loss of her husband and daughter, has closed herself off to others. So when James, her father hires a young 18 year old boy who is caring for his three younger siblings to help on the farm, Dovie wants nothing to do with it. The youngest, Alice befriends the ornery goose, Norman, and from the time they meet, Alice and "Mr. Norman" are inseparable. While Bill, the oldest, Elmer, and Alice work hard and adjust to life on the farm, Evie, the oldest girl, tries to make trouble and wants to go on a search for their parents . . . who abandoned them. When Alice begins to call Dovie "Mama Dovie", Evie comes unglued. Quail Crossings is a good story of a different time, a time of pulling together, working hard on the family farm, of discipline and of faith in God . . . hardship was a way of life . . . many Americans cannot fathom such a time as this . . . Quail Crossings will restore your hope and faith . . . don't miss it . . .

Great listen.

I usually listen to business books on road trips. This was a nice change of pace. Draws you in quickly, doesn't disappoint.
