Magical Part 2 with exceptional Characters!!

Prophecy’s Child picks up just after the events of book 1, in which Winne managed to destroy the harvester machine that Nils Kane was using to suck the magic out of Chanters for his own plans, but in the process, killing hundreds of them. Whilst Winnie and some of her friends have managed to get away, Joey was killed, and Winnie lost her baby, and Danny is still missing. Even worse for Winnie was the utter betrayal of her sister Morgan, who has joined the ‘Red Legs’ and not only turned Winnie in, but was willing to watch her die.
At the start of this book, there are terrible dust storms starting to sweep the country, so bad, that people are wearing masks, and head gear, and have not seen the sun in days. People are scared as it is reminiscent of the events that led to the destruction of Europe. This is only furthering the anger towards Chanters, and Kane continues his campaign of hate against them as well.
Meanwhile, as Winnie and her friends are still trying to come to terms with everything, and work out a new plan to survive in this hostile environment, a new threat appears in the form of a new Mob Boss from a different city, who has decided he wants to run Baltimore, his name is Cleaver York. He and his gang, led by a rather annoying Captain named Cricket, start to harass Winnie, as they are desperate for Winnie to join them. Cleaver in a Chanter to, with a limited ability to divine the future, and he has seen Winnie by his side.
As events start to culminate in Prophecy’s Child, Winnie does something truly extraordinary with magic, something not seen in hundreds of years, that saves thousands of lives. For some, she is seen as a Hero, a Saviour, for others, this only confirms that Chanters are evil and must be stopped, as they are causing the catastrophic damage to the Earth.
This is a book that moves at an amazing pace, there are so many different things happening. Cleaver and his crew are trying to not just take Baltimore, but also convince Winnie to come and work for him. There is an environmental disaster brewing as dust storms are sweeping the country causing all sorts of issues. On top of this, magic is starting to act strangely within the infrastructure that it has kept going for decades, Tris with her job finds all sorts of issues, and is struggling to stay on top of things before Baltimore goes the way of Boston. There is obviously still the story of Artos and Winnie and their crew as well. There are also multiple personal stories as Davis continues to develop his characters. Winnie is delving deeper into the Sable (or dark Magic), both with her work, and also in a personal relationship I don’t want to give spoilers for. There is also the friendship and relationships between Winnie and her friends, Tris and Cait, as well as Tris’s continued battle with the city’s infrastructure. Winnie’s relationship with her mother is also explored more in this book, and we learn some really fascinating background about Winnie as a result.
There are some other really intriguing stories as well, Nils Kane and his continued actions to undermine and destroy the Chanters, and more importantly, the reasons why. We learn more about Artos and his background as well, which is just fascinating. One of the really remarkable stories in this book though, is Victor and Morgan, not just their relationship, but how it relates to others in the story, Winnie, Nils Kane, and some others I won’t give away.
Throughout this entire story, there are these continued threads to relating to Arthurian legend, references to the Knights of the round table, or different linkages to characters that are in the original legends. For those that love Arthurian Legend, this adds so much to the story, it creates this additional special layer to what is already an intriguing and captivating Urban Fantasy tale.
The Arthurian aspect is exceptional, but there are so many other brilliant aspects to the world-building that really bring this story to life and this, combined with the extraordinary character work just makes this such a captivating, thrilling and most of all, wonderfully fun story. Book 1 was great, but Book 2 takes this series to a whole new level and is just brilliant.
Stacy Gonzalez continues to provide just amazing Narration for this series, she does amazing voices for every character, both Male and Female, especially Winnie, who she creates this strong, vibrant and confident voice with a really captures her character. Gonzalez does such a wonderful job of creating a unique set of voices, both male and female, so that you can clearly differiante who is talking. Davis has written this with an audiobook in mind, so that it flows very nicely as Gonzalez tells the story, and she does an outstanding job of not just the voices, but also capturing their emotional state. She really brings the characters to life, so that we understand if they are angry, frustrated, happy, you can really tell how they are feeling, The Narration is Extraordinary, and the performance makes this absolutely worth listening to!
