An Epic Conclusion to an Outstanding Series!!

This story picks up a few months after the epic events at the end of book 4, in what was one of those moments that leaves you shaking your head and with goosebumps, as Winnie used Excalibur to summon the Dragons back to Earth in a last ditched effort to fight Kane.
With the Dragons, Winnie’s Rebels have managed to turn the tide of the battles, managing to use them to defeat Kane’s ‘Fell Beasts’, and for a time, it looks like they may gain the upper hand. Kane continues to use Couch to unleash his hideous weapon, cannons that fire a shell that unleashes a ‘hell fire’ that either burns and kills its victim, or worse, it turns them into one of the Garbarians, or Fell Beasts, who then either attack other survivors, or run from the city in packs to go and cause mayhem elsewhere.
When Kane tries to unleash this on Philadelphia though, Winnie releases the Dragons, who not only destroy his weapons, but a significant part of Kane’s (Couch’s), forces. Unfortunately, in their desire to kill the Garbarians, the Dragons also destroy a lot of the city as well, and the Lady of the Lake’s warning becomes all to real, as Winnie realises that whilst the Dragons are powerful, they are difficult to control, and once unleashed like this, they will cause destruction and it could mean that whilst they will defeat Kane’s forces it will come at tremendous cost.
Whilst Winnie is struggling with her choices, and trying to do the right thing, on the other side, Kane has succumbed to the darkness, his use of the Fell Magic has twisted his body into something inhumane, he is now a monster, a combination of various creatures of myth. He is also desperate and against all advice, even that of the Fell itself which advises caution, Kane unleashes the Chimera on the world to destroy the Dragons.
This is the final book in the series, and I don’t want to give too much away, needless to say, it is the ultimate book of good versus evil, Winnie on the side of good, the Champion of the Fae, wielder of Excalibur, and in Arthurian Legend, the one true Queen that will unite all in a time of peace and prosperity (according to the legends). Standing by Winnie are her Knights, Victor, descendant of Sir Lancelot, then there is Tris (Tristan), Morgan, Maria, Danny, Kripke, Cricket, Garraldi and the rest of the Dusters. And of course, Winnie’s Mother Elaine.
On the other is Kane, welding the power of the Lord of Chaos, the Destroyer, The Fell, unable to walk on this Earth, so using a Champion of his own to enable the death of those he holds responsible – the Fae.
This is a battle that has been going on for generations, a cyclic war between the Fae and the Fell.
However, this is not just another good vs evil story, as there are for more dire consequences, with the fate of all human kind, and the known world at stake. What is more, each time Kane uses another weapon of the Fell, and Winnie finds some way of thwarting him, it brings the two closer to annulation, and it is only Winnie who works out that ultimately, this is going to end very badly for everyone unless she can stop it.
There are so many wonderful character stories within this final book, as each of Winnie’s ‘Knights’ fights valiantly to hold back the forces of darkness that Kane has unleashed, using both modern weapons and magic alike. I am not going to go into all of the characters (There isn’t enough pages), but as in book 4, Elaine stands out again, along with Victor and the kids, Jacob and Fiona, who are just brilliant on so many levels. Someone who really needs to be mentioned as the constant warrior in this series, behind the lines, and always keeping everything going tirelessly, is Tris. She is one of the true heroes of this series, even though she barely lifts a weapon, without her, none of the others would be alive, without her saving city infrastructure, or holding shields, Tris is one of Winnie’s most powerful Knights.
Just as fascinating of course, are those on the side of evil. It is equally intriguing watching Kane slip further into chaos, as he willingly lets his body be deformed by the dark magic. We don’t even realise how disfigured he has become until it is mentioned by one of the General’s children. Kane’s fall to the dark side has been intriguing, but his total capitulation in book 5, as he takes out those that have been closest to him, is something that is frightening to behold, but masterfully done by Davis.
This is a book that captures all aspects of this final tale, the ultimate battle of good vs evil, the two champions of (the Queen of Good, and the King of Evil), battling for forces that are unable to set foot on the ‘playing table’ as such, that being the planet Earth, which has time and again, been used in this conflict.
This final battle is brutal and vicious, and it is worth noting that you should not get attached to any of your favourite characters, for none of the Main Characters are safe.
This series has been outstanding in every sense of the word, and this final part brings that all together in this climactic ending that is just EPIC!! The ending of book 4 was breathtaking, but this book, and its ending are just Extraordinary!!
Stacy Gonzalez continues to provide just amazing Narration for this series, she does amazing voices for every character, both Male and Female, especially Winnie. Winnie has continued to grow from this young woman who was a shop clerk to wielding unimaginable power, and Gonzalez has managed to capture this in the character with the confidence she projects. This series has been written with an audiobook in mind, so that it flows nicely. Gonzalez does an outstanding job of capturing not just the voices, but the emotion of the characters, so that we really understand how they feel.
It has to be noted that the final chapter in this book is just Epic, and Gonzalez does a masterful job of bringing this to life in such a magnificent way that you really feel like you are there with all the emotional impact of the moment. It is just brilliant!!! This is one book in which the Audiobook is a MUST listen!!
