Resumen del Editor

Cornwall, England, 1942. Their special place is up here on the clifftop, where the gulls cry and the waves crash. Rosie’s heart swells as she gazes into Danny’s deep green eyes. "Let’s promise to come back, every year. No matter what." But will the war force them to break their promise?

Rosie knows that air pilot Danny is the love of her life. It doesn’t matter if his family thinks she isn’t good enough for him, with her factory job and East End accent. And when Danny proposes on holiday in Cornwall, high on the cliffs above the wild blue sea, Rosie can’t wait for him to come home after his next mission so they can be a proper family. They promise to return to Cornwall every summer to celebrate their love.

But in wartime, tragedy is just around the corner. The "missing in action" telegram about Danny shatters Rosie’s heart into a million pieces. Even as the bombs of the Blitz rain down and orphaned children huddle for shelter, Rosie vows to never forget Danny or the promise she made.

As she insists on visiting Cornwall and sitting by the sea where Danny proposed, Rosie’s family can’t understand. Everyone has lost someone in this terrible war. And when Rosie’s sister confesses she is hiding a terrible secret, it turns her world upside down all over again. Rosie is left questioning everything she knew about the man she loved. Should she break her promise and move on? Or will her loyalty to Danny’s memory tear apart what’s left of her family?

An absolutely heart-wrenching, powerful, and emotional novel about the hardships of war and the strength of love. Perfect for fans of Shirley Dickson, Wives of War, and Lisa Wingate.

Nearly good, but lackluster in places.

The story starts from a fairly cliche beginning of a young couple promising to marry before the young man heads off to fight in the war. From there it follows their lives as they both believe the other to be gone forever and it bounces back and forth between being immersive and then having something incredibly contrived happen that will draw you right back out again. It also goes on too long for what it wants to be, which is surprising given that's it's not a long novel overall.

If you can forgive insanely contrived plot-points and like the almost happy ending being teased for 10 hours, give it a read.
