I never asked for a younger brother. The house smelled different after he arrived—like rot tucked into the seam of the sofa. That backpack made my skin crawl: dead rabbits, a squirrel I’d watched get flattened, a kid who could make animals move and men step backward into traffic.

They called Leo weird. I called him dangerous.

Dad called it adoption and healing. Mom called it grace. I called it trouble.

But when my mother found the journal hidden in his bag, everything changed—her discovery didn’t just hurt our family; it killed her. After that, the rules of the house shifted. Monsters started wearing familiar faces, and the man who’d taught me to trust therapists began to show his true face—hollowed, horned, and hungry.

If you think monsters live outside town, you haven’t seen what a child can raise in his basement.

Told up close and uneasy, this is the story of a brother who won’t let you sleep. When secrets, grief, and ancient devotion collide, a suburban home becomes the breeding ground for horror.

Absolutely wild. Creepy kids always get under my skin, and Little Leo will haunt my nightmares for a while!
This novella packs a serious punch in such a short space. If you're a horror fan, this is a must-read. The characters are vivid, the atmosphere is eerie, and the pacing never lets up. I especially recommend the audiobook—it adds an extra layer of tension and makes the experience even more immersive. If the author writes more horror, I hope she continues releasing them in audio format, because it's such an accessible and gripping way to experience her stories. 10/10—I need another book from her ASAP.

That is the stuff of nightmares

I decided I wanted to read horror, suspense, mystery books etc… for the month of October and this was my beginning. I was not disappointed. But I must say I would have took Leo back to the adoption agency so fast. He was to obsessed with death. And that book bag of pets SMH….Read it!!!!!! You’ll see what I’m talking about…

Love this story! Very very creepy. The narration and sound effects were on point. I read the book, love the audio even more.

Don’t mess with Leo!

Just like the author states in the interview at the end of this book, REPRESENTATION MATTERS. A black child being in a horror setting like The Omen was nothing shy of fascinating. It was SO satisfying to guess little pieces of the storyline while reading this. The characters were fleshed out well for how short this novella read in length. I like the use of the realistic horror of a black female mental patient being "taken advantage of" by their therapist in contrast to the supernatural horrors of conceiving a demon child. Very much rosemary's baby vibes with that theme. I really loved this piece. I hate that there isn't more of Kenya Moss-Dyme's work on this platform.

It's totally okay to write black children into horror!!
