Resumen del Editor

In a timely update of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, National Book Award finalist Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic.

A smart, funny, gorgeous retelling of Pride and Prejudice, starring all characters of color.

Don't miss the audiobook, read by Elizabeth Acevedo, the beloved author and narrator of The Poet X, winner of an Odyssey Honor and an AudioFile Earphones Award winner.

Zuri Benitez has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.

When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.

But with four wild sisters pulling her in different directions, cute boy Warren vying for her attention, and college applications hovering on the horizon, Zuri fights to find her place in Bushwick’s changing landscape, or lose it all.

Ibi Zoboi's Pride is a strong option for summer reading and for sharing in a classroom or for homeschooling.

The Remix

I enjoyed this remix of Pride and Prejudice! I could see myself as a teen in this Afro Caribbean Brooklyn tale. At times Zuri drove me crazy but this YA read was well done! Highly recommend.
Elizabeth Acevedo is becoming one of my favorite narrators by the way. Excellent performance!

Such Fun!

Not being a fan of remade novels, I was surprisingly entertained by the sample of this book. Having purchased it, I was even more surprised how much I loved it.
A lot of that is due, I think, to the way the author alludes to Pride and Prejudice, but tells a rich, contemporary, believable story using modern day issues like gentrification and social media.
Lovable characters and a fabulous narrator made me want to listen in one sitting/make it go on longer.

Every girl from the hood needs to listen to this

Beautiful in every way! This is the love story I would have loved to have as a kid growing up in the hood. Zuri would have made Elizabeth Bennett proud in this updated, and very much needed, Pride and Prejudice remix. If you’ve dealt with gentrification, going on to college, moving from your hometown, moving from the hood to a more wealthier neighborhood where you may feel like a fish out of water than this will touch you in a way you won’t expect. Honestly, the last few chapters had me in near tears.
Acevedo did a marvelous job as the narrator. Every character had a distinct voice, and I never had to guess who was speaking. Lastly, I love how multifaceted Zoboi’s characters were. She shows the many faces of the black community through her characters. I felt like I was seeing my own family. Read it. Read it. Please Read it.

The Power of Pride

Growing up myself in a neighbor that has new comers moving into it, I can relate to this story. I too cherish porch conversations and knowing my neighbors. The rich history and traditions of a place "others" never valued, but now that it's cool to live urban they want to rewrite the rich narrative to fit their level of comfort.

I also relate to the value systems and experiences of both main characters. The boldness of Z and the otherness of Darius. I grew up with more worldly experiences, but still have pride in the local love of neighborhood flowershops, stores and churches.

Read it and read it again! It's worth it!

Well written and well read!

I absolutely LOVE this book and the story it tells! I really enjoy reading books where the characters are relatable and come to life. I felt as though I was in the story right alongside Zuri, seeing her world as she sees it. Very well done!!

Love it!!

First, the narrator was fabulous and her reading felt perfect for the book. Now for the text, I love Pride and Prejudice and loved how this retelling took the bones of it and made it new. I know some people have issues with Darius in it, but Darcy has similar drawbacks, so it really does follow P&P in that, I think. I enjoyed the awkward romance part just like I did in P&P.

I have read another book by Zoboi and love her writing style and her poetry. I suspect she’s going to be on my list of favorite authors as I read more of her books.

If you’re a fan of P&P, I think you’ll enjoy this.

AMAZING REMIX of an Original

IBI ZOBOI
reimagines womanhood, the journey of self-discovery, a coming of age story in the grit and cultures of Brooklyn as well as updating a "Classic" into something all her own. Acevedo is the PERFECT voice for the story with her NYC flair and voice.
