Acerca de esta escucha
The US Navy's On-the-Roof Gang, Volume 1: Prelude to War is an historical novel based on the unknown true-life story of the "On-the-Roof Gang", the US Navy's fledgling radio intelligence organization in the years leading up to World War II. It is based on the real life of Harry Kidder, a US Navy radioman who first discovered and deciphered Japanese katakana telegraphic code while stationed in the Philippines in the 1920s, discovering the he was listening to Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) radio communications. Kidder strongly believed in the future of radio intelligence, and a chance meeting with Lieutenant Laurance Safford led to the birth of the Navy's Radio Intelligence community.
Kidder taught others the nascent art of intercepting IJN communications on the roof of the Main Navy Building in Washington, DC. From 1928 to 1941, 176 sailors and marines attended this training and were then stationed as radio intercept operators around the Pacific. These men would become known as the On-the-Roof Gang and were charged with keeping track of the IJN as they prepared for war with the United States. The circumstances of America's entry into World War II hinged on success or failure of the On-the-Roof Gang, and Harry Kidder knew this.
On-the-Roof Gang: Prelude to War concludes with the "date which will live in infamy", December 7, 1941.

William Wallace started out as a humble knight, but he died a war hero. He gave up everything in his fight for Scottish freedom, including his life. When captured, Wallace was hung, drawn, and quartered by the English king for crimes against the crown. Though he was memorialized in the 1995 film Braveheart, this book tells how much of what we associate with Wallace is more legend than fact. Still, the spirit of the great Scotsman lives on in the hearts and minds of his compatriots today.

J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Historia
In 1860 Surrey, a young woman has only one occupation: to marry. Senza Fyne is beautiful, intelligent, and lacks neither wealth nor connections. Finding a husband shouldn't be difficult, not when she has her entire life before her. But it's not life that preoccupies her thoughts. It's death - and that shadowy spectre haunts her every step. So does Mr. Knell. Heart-thumpingly attractive, obviously eligible - he'd be her perfect match, if only he wasn't so macabre. All his talk about death, all that teasing about knowing how to avoid it. Impulsively, she takes Knell up on his offer.

Spector reassesses US and Japanese strategy and offers some provocative interpretations. He shows that the dual advance across the Pacific by MacArthur and Nimitz was less a product of strategic calculation and more a pragmatic solution to bureaucratic, doctrinal, and public relations problems facing the Army and Navy. He also argues that Japan made its fatal error not in the Midway campaign but in abandoning its offensive strategy after that defeat and allowing itself to be drawn into a war of attrition.

Historia
Genghis Khan was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Shaped by abandonment and betrayal, Temujin endured, driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon. Through a series of courageous raids, Temujin's legend grew until he was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of 1,000 warhorses, to subject all nations and empires to his will.

The Kingdom of Jerusalem, also known as Outremer, is the land far beyond the sea. Baptized in blood when the men of the First Crusade captured Jerusalem from the Saracens in the early 12th century, the kingdom defined an utterly new world, a land of blazing heat and a medley of cultures, a place where enemies were neighbors and neighbors became enemies. At the helm of this growing kingdom sits young Baldwin IV, an intelligent and courageous boy committed to the welfare and protection of his people.

Wayétu Moore’s powerful debut novel, She Would Be King, reimagines the dramatic story of Liberia’s early years through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Gbessa, exiled from the West African village of Lai, is starved, bitten by a viper, and left for dead, but still she survives. June Dey, raised on a plantation in Virginia, hides his unusual strength until a confrontation with the overseer forces him to flee. Norman Aragon, the child of a white British colonizer and a Maroon slave from Jamaica, can fade from sight when the earth calls him.

In 1943, as the war against Nazi Germany raged abroad, President Franklin Roosevelt had a critical goal: a face-to-face sit-down with his allies Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill. This first-ever meeting of the Big Three in Tehran, Iran, would decide some of the most crucial strategic details of the war. Yet when the Nazis found out about the meeting, their own secret plan took shape—an assassination plot that would’ve changed history.

Amazing story of little known important work
When I began listening to the audio version of this story, I expected it to be historical fiction and was surprised to find that it is a very accurate story about a number of dedicated men and a few women who worked under the radar to develop and utilize a clever system crucial to the history of American cryptology. Since I had worked in Maryland myself in this field some years back, I was captivated with all the detail that was so fascinating and is now unclassified so that we all might learn of it. The story was very well written and entertaining, and it was greatly enhanced in this Audible version read by Joseph Courtemanche. There were many details that might have been confusing to the general reader (military and cryptologic acronyms), but these did not detract from the story and actually made it more real for the educated reader. It was not just an historical recitation at all, though, since the actual story was both compelling and even heartbreaking at times. Kudos to the author for all the research it must have entailed and the manner in which he put the story together…and also to the excellent reader for using just the right cadence and feeling in his telling us this incredible tale!

What a wonderful homage!
What a wonderful homage to this group of men who annonymously protected and defended our country! Really, nobody was allowed to know this was going on! These books provide a lot of behind-the-scenes, real-life accounts of real troops and what they had to deal with...although, I'm sure there are still many factoids one would not want to recall. I've always had a tough time with my history lessons in general, so I did need to concentrate pretty hard to follow along. To remedy that, I focused on the men's individual accounts, making it become more of a novel. Because of this, I was either glad or sad for each fellow, depending on the outcome of their own experience. I continually tried to keep in mind that they were not fictional, but real people, living real lives. However, there were definitely a couple of moments when I'd shout out "Dude, don't do that!" These books also bring to light a better understanding of why people feel the way they do about other people, while trying to overcome those thoughts. I can understand the fear Americans must have been experiencing at the time.
Thanks, Matt, for researching and compiling these events into something I thoroughly enjoyed!

An outstanding telling of a story about extraordinary people
Not all history is interesting. Making something historical fiction doesn’t always make it better. Matt Zullo succeeds where others fail by taking what could very easily be a very dry subject matter and making it both compelling and interesting. I’ve read the book; this telling makes it even better. This is a fantastic story of amazing achievements by extraordinary people. I highly recommend it.

Enjoyed the book and audiobook
Read the book when it came out and bought the audiobook so I could revisit the stories while exercising. Listened to the sample first to make sure that the narrator had a voice that I could listen to for hours. The narration does the book justice, I enjoyed it as much as reading the book myself.
