In 1983, the world stands at the brink of nuclear annihilation, and only a few people are aware of it. A riveting story of how two men’s lives intersect in the midst of an existential crisis, The Able Archers is told through the eyes of two key participants: a young American intelligence officer, Captain Kevin Cattani, and his more experienced Soviet counterpart, Colonel Ivan Levchenko.

The story plays out from the skies over Siberia to the gritty, dangerous streets of East Berlin. The radically different world views of Cattani and Levchenko punctuate the deep divisions of the Cold War. The evolving relationship between the two men also highlights the humanity common to both sides. Only by working together will Cattani and Levchenko find a way to prevent a global nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union.

For me, it was a part of history I lived. The carrier group in the Sea of O reminded me of Ranger sneaking up the west coast of Korea and starting air ops just after the Pueblo was taken. Sure miss the days of being able to sneak a carrier group up towards an adversary

I don’t normally read books like this, but holy cow! Exciting interested in exploring more like this.

Amazing!

I thought this book might be difficult to read because of all the names and technical terms. Instead, I found that the character development made each role memorable. I think it reads like a thriller screenplay. The dialogue is very believable, and the narrator does a good job at differentiating voices. I would love to read more by the same author it’s fast moving and I couldn’t put it down.

Fascinating story

This book truly details how close we came to nuclear war after the downing of the Korean flight 007 in 1983. If not for the work of the Abel archers the world, as we know, it would have been a nuclear waste.

Great read about flight 007 big shot down in 1983

Knowing bits and pieces of this history, it was extremely interesting tying it all together. Unfortunately, I don’t think the readers were up to the task of convincing the audience of the gravity of the situation. Several different times I found myself distracted by the 4th grade level reading cadence of the actors. Overall, I’d still recommend the book as it’s possible I’m just more sensitive than others to the cadence, and the history lesson is worth it.

Good story, poor performance

A very well written book from both the US and Soviet perspectives on the closest we've ever come to vaporizing the human race. while I knew the story, having grown up during this time period, this book really fleshed out the details in a fascinating manner. The madness of MAD. Enjoy the book.

Great story on a lesser known dance with the apocalypse.

Very well constructed retelling of a seemingly unimaginable time in history where the world was closer than ever to nuclear extinction.

Good Listen!

I had no idea that any of this had really happened. Absolutely insane. This is a must listen

Mind blowing

I personally enjoyed this take on history very much. It was different at first having the Russian viewpoint in the American viewpoint told them obviously different viewpoints. It turned out to be really enjoyable and informative.
