Resumen del Editor

The Instant USA Today Best Seller!

A BuzzFeed Best Romance of 2021!

One of Marie Claire’s most anticipated romances of 2021!

One of Cosmopolitan's most anticipated fall books of 2021!

“Dunmore is my new find in historical romance. Her A League of Extraordinary Women series is extraordinary.”—Julia Quinn, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“This series balances friendship, politics, history, and romance in just the right mix.”—U.S. Representative Katie Porter

Going toe-to-toe with a brooding Scotsman is rather bold for a respectable suffragist, but when he happens to be one's unexpected husband, what else is an unwilling bride to do?

London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life:

  1. Acclaim as an artist.
  2. A noble cause.
  3. Marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman.

Why, then, does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear into the hearts of Britain's peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she's stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions...

When the daughter of his business rival all but falls into his lap, Lucian sees opportunity. As a self-made man, he has vast wealth but holds little power, and Hattie might be the key to finally setting long-harbored political plans in motion. Driven by an old desire for revenge, he has no room for his new wife's apprehensions or romantic notions, bewitching as he finds her.

But a sudden journey to Scotland paints everything in a different light. Hattie slowly sees the real Lucian and realizes she could win everything—as long as she is prepared to lose her heart.

Great Read

The spice. The romance. The history, not necessarily in that order but you know…loved it!

Sweet story

I love the strong female character and her desire to bring awareness to the plight of the coal miners through art. I simply could not help but sense that Lucien and Hattie were something of mirror relationship of Christian and Ana. 🤔 But again, I enjoyed the story. The narration was not my favorite but wouldn’t prevent me from listening to more by her.

I yelled at Hattie, but I also praised her

Such an incredible novel! I love how Dunmore breaks the conventions of the genre without becoming anachronistic. The social and political nuances are easily woven into the story without shoving them in your face. That ending was so unexpected that I wished it was more conventional, but by the epilogue I was thanking Dunmore for taking that initially maddening turn. Can’t wait for the 4th book!!

The reading was so smooth, made for easy listening.

Nothing. the ending could have been with her back in their home and pregnant. Just to finish the happy ending.

Delightful

Let's be real--romance novels are written for dashing heroes and funny heroines, not always deep plot. Evie Dunmore has really shined with this book series, but Portrait of a Scotsman really hit me hard. Not only was it funny and compelling, it was also startling raw.

Most romance novels start with a woman losing her agency and a man changing through his love for said woman. This novel followed that formula, but half way through turned it on it's head. I cheered for Hattie's agency and struggled with Lucien through his trauma. I laughed as they built an authentic relationship built on mutual respect and humor, not simply physical attraction (which was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 too, ngl). But his apology to Hattie was the deepest, most significant part of the novel--I connected with it on such a deep level. How many other women have suffered the lose of agency and never gotten the closure they deserved? Hattie's ability to chase that and receive the closure she needed to heal was so cathartic.

Evie Dunmore, you've stolen my heart. Never stop please!

Disappointing ending

Adored the first two in this series, and this was actually turning out to be my favorite of the three. Then the ending happened. Heroine ended up being so selfish...if it had happened midway through the book, she could have probably been redeemed. But waiting until the final couple chapters? Evie Dunmore, you can retrieve your dagger from my back now.

Lucien ended up being so tender hearted, yet bad a$$ when his wife needs saving. Definitely in my top six H's of all time. I mean this man started out so clumsy with Hattie, unsure of how to go about being a husband....he is freaking reading books on the love language of flowers right after she rejects him. He tried so hard to make her happy. Lucien is just too precious. 👑🦁💖 Narrator was awesome...nicely done all the way around.

Not disappointed I used a credit for this one, but I do wish I would have stopped listening at around ch. 35 or so.

Wonderful

I bought this book way after it appeared in ad on Instagram and from then I was so interested in reading the book. I’ve read mixed reviews on this book. From what I’ve gathered in the bad reviews, some people don’t like the way it ended, that it seemed rushed towards the last 3 chapters, that Hattie got annoying blah blah blah. So I was skeptical to reach the ending of the book for that reason, but I’m glad I kept reading! This book def starts off really slow but I love that way it was developed! The whole storyline expands naturally and I found myself disliking Lucian but then admiring him in the end. Character development is so important and Evie portrayed that. DEFFF recommend.
