The world's bestselling crime writer Patricia Cornwell presents the extraordinary eighteenth novel in the Kay Scarpetta series, in which Kay Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could ruin her professionally and personally.

Kay Scarpetta has been training at the Dover Port Mortuary, mastering the art of 'virtual autopsy'—a groundbreaking procedure that could soon revolutionise forensic science. And it is not too long before these new skills urgently need to be put into practice. A young man drops dead, apparently from a heart condition, eerily close to Scarpetta's home. But when his body is examined the next morning, there are stunning indications that he may have been alive when he was zipped inside a pouch and locked in the cooler.

When the revolutionary 3D radiology scans reveal more shocking details about internal injuries unlike any Scarpetta has ever seen, she realizes that this is a case of murder—and that she is fighting a cunning and uniquely cruel enemy. Now it is a race against time to discover who and why before more people die. But that time is running out . . .

I don't know this wasn't her best book or at least my opinion wasn't her best book

the readers were different from her normal readers

I even double checked to make sure it wasn’t a virtual voice. I am 7 chapters in and thinking of quitting. I slowed the speed a little , which helped a bit, but not sure it is enough. The tone is so different, I initially thought it was the wrong series.

Well, I finished it but it was a real chore. I found myself confused often, And bored. My least favorite of the series so far.

This narrator is killing me

I'm only halfway through this one, after zipping through the series up to this one. The narrator feels robotic and not emotionally connected like the other narrators, weird musical background interludes, and possibly my biggest gripe: Scarpetta has a whole secret military background we never heard about before now, despite hearing her inner monologue for 17 books? Or did I somehow forget that important detail? This one just feels off. I'm dreading that the next book is the same narrator. 😂 I may have to listen to the rest of this one and the next on a fast speed to just power through.

Feels disconnected from the series

I love the Kay Scarpetta series, but feel the narrator was not good for Port Mortuary. At times, I felt like I was listening to a newscaster and other times she would go into this weird whispering voice. Not excited to know that the same narrator did the next one, Red Mist, that I am starting next.

Narrator’s poor performance

I love this whole series. This one felt unfinished, so right on to the next one.

Love this whole series

I loved it all starting with the sound of the reader, the addition of music and of course the storyline with technology inserted within the story. This is one of my favorites.

I loved the addition of music at key moments.

If the writing isn’t dramatic enough then the music won’t help in an audio book.

Lose the music

This kind of narrator takes a mindless listen and turns it into an exercise in anxiety. Her narration style is so unejoyable for me. I like to listen to books every day- and started this old series enjoying the narration and sort of history about past twenty years. I’m committed to Kay, but the audio book production company should be ashamed of themselves for allowing Kate Burton to ruin the story.

Bad narration

Characters are somewhat convoluted and main character complains too much for it to be a pleasant read.

Just not in style with the rest of the series.

I'm always nervous to hear a series' long-time narrator has changed, but I was pleasantly surprised with the transition to Kate Burton ... the only "voice" I felt was "off" was Marino's, but looking back I was forced to acknowledge I'd never been able to fully embrace any of those performances - so overall, let's rule this a win! What was extremely puzzling though, is that a detailed, intricately woven backstory seemed to emerge from nowhere for Scarpetta after all these years. My initial impulse was to go back to Book 1 and reread all looking for sly hints (or perhaps I missed out and out references?) to this; however, I'm going to hold that thought for a heartbeat and ponder. Once again the dysfunctional gang is all back working together ... you know, because it's been such smooth sailing in the past! Kay has been tied up elsewhere on a special assignment for months, so her #2 Jack Fielding has been left running amok, unsupervised, possibly destroying everything Scarpetta and Co. have built over the years. Too many coincidences and really, are interested parties always able to investigate the crimes? Hard to imagine where we go from here, but you know I'm boarding that train!
