Resumen del Editor

Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys stars in this fascinating and award-winning one-man show about international star of stage and screen Richard Burton. Written by Mark Jenkins, Playing Burton offers a penetrating look at the notorious actor’s life, from growing up in an impoverished mining community in South Wales to becoming one of the greatest performers of his generation. Following his passionate, though tempestuous, love affair with Elizabeth Taylor and his tragic - and very public - battle with alcoholism, Playing Burton is a soulful exploration of fame, ambition, and identity told from the perspective of the megastar who experienced it all.

Please note: Playing Burton contains adult language and themes.

Richard Burton come to life

It was a great feeling being in the company of one of the greatest actors by of the last century. It felt like he was there and made me realize how much I miss him and how sorry I am that he couldn’t or wouldn’t shed his drinking!

I adore this performance. Matthew Rhys is brilliant and does justice to one of the best stage actors of all time.

Great work!

Really love Matthew Rhys and he was great in this. Probably helps to know a little about Burton going in, but still a great one-man performance.

Perfection

What a lovely gift to us all. My only criticism would be that it ended.

A Tour de Force

Mr Rhys does an astonishing job. As with all these first person, postmortem recountings of significant aspects of a life, they rise or fall on the voice, and this was well above the norm.

Mr Rhys has got guts.

I'm Speechless

Really, I'm speechless, because this play is so brilliantly written and performed. I have no more to say, except that the script is illuminated with quotes, among them Shakespeare, Marlowe, and, my favorite, a rather long one from "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold."

I know I will be withdrawing this work from my "library" again and again.

True to Burton

Mesmerizing performance. Brings Burton to life. Interweaves the classics to portray Burton's life. I just wish it was longer.

Dinner guest

This performance felt like a conversation with Burton over dinner and drinks, of course. I started listening while out for a walk and couldn’t wait to hit play again over coffee the next morning.

Seemed like Burton reincarnated

What a wonderful performance by Matthew Rhys. He captured the very essence of Burton or at least as much that was revealed to the public. Excellent voice accuracy as well...Highly recommend.

Matthew Rhys Amazing!

First was exposed to his incredible talent in “The Americans” - Burton was from an era before my time but I feel like I know him. Bloody Good Old Boy!!
