Ian Frazier
Acerca de esta escucha
Ian Frazier’s magnum opus: a love song to New York City’s most heterogeneous and alive borough.
For the past fifteen years, Ian Frazier has been walking the Bronx. Paradise Bronx reveals the amazingly rich and tumultuous history of this amazingly various piece of our greatest city. From Jonas Bronck, who bought land from the local Native Americans, to the formerly gang-wracked South Bronx that gave birth to hip-hop, Frazier’s loving exploration is a moving tour de force about the polyglot culture that is America today.
During the Revolution, when the Bronx was unclaimed territory known as the Neutral Ground, some of the war’s decisive battles were fought here by George Washington’s troops. Gouverneur Morris, one of the most colorful Founding Fathers, owned a huge swath of the Bronx, where he lived when he was not in Paris during the French Revolution or helping write the US Constitution.
Frazier shows us how the coming of the railroads and the subways drove the settling of the Bronx by various waves of immigration―Irish, Italian, Jewish (think the Grand Concourse), African American, Caribbean, Puerto Rican (J.Lo is one of the borough’s most famous citizens). The romance of the Yankees, the disaster of the Cross Bronx Expressway, the invention of rap and hip-hop, the resurgence of community as the borough’s communities learn mutual aid―all are investigated, recounted, and celebrated in Frazier’s inimitable voice.
This is a book like no other about a quintessential American city and the resilience and beauty of its citizens.

Over thousands of years, the Mississippi watershed was home to millions of Indigenous people who regarded "the great river" with awe and respect, adorning its banks with astonishing spiritual earthworks. But European settlers and American pioneers had a different vision: the river was a foe to conquer. As part of the legendary comedy team known as Nichols and May, May revolutionized sketch comedy before striking out on her own to make history as the third woman to be admitted into the Directors Guild of America when she wrote, directed, and starred in 1971’s A New Leaf. Throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, May was one of Hollywood’s top screenwriters and script doctors and one of the only women directing within the studio system. For a long time, scientists have wondered how life has emerged from inanimate chemistry, and whether Earth is the only place where it exists. Charles Darwin speculated about life on Earth beginning in a warm little pond. Some of his contemporaries believed that life existed on Mars. It once seemed inevitable that the truth would be known by now. It is not. For more than a century, the origins and extent of life have remained shrouded in mystery. But, as Mario Livio and Jack Szostak reveal in Is Earth Exceptional?, the veil is finally lifting.

Campbell Flynn, art historian, professor, and fêted fixture of the literati, always knew that when his life came crashing down, it would happen in public—yet he never imagined that a single year in London would expose so much. He’s never taken other people half as seriously as they take themselves, which is the first of his mistakes. The second is a new project: opportunistic and precisely calibrated to rake in a fortune.

Charlie knows he’s not the main character in his own story. He’s just another schmuck in the Ivy League looking to be somebody. He plays in a terrible jazz band, falls in love too easily, and struggles with the human being business. Written in a wry, comedic style, A Comedy of Nobodies: A Collection of Stories traces one fall semester in the lives of four typical but unforgettable university students who, as compensation for their existential anxieties, just want to feel understood.

On a Move is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing.

Perle Mesta was a force to be reckoned with. In her heyday, this wealthy globe-trotting Washington widow was one of the most famous women in America, garnering as much media attention as Eleanor Roosevelt. Renowned for her world-class parties featuring politicians and celebrities, she was very close to three presidents–Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson. Truman named her as the first female envoy to Luxembourg, which inspired the hit musical based on Perle’s life – “Call Me Madam” – which starred Ethel Merman, ran on Broadway for two years and later became a movie.

Born in a country that has repeatedly traumatized her and her loved ones, Maya Wiley grew up in a household that prioritized activism, hope, and resilience above all else. This attitude landed her father on President Nixon’s enemies list as her mother organized third-party political platforms. Still, they modeled hope for their children. In the decades since, she has borne witness as presidents and political figures used racism and fascism to gain power, and as cities have again and again elected white men, effectively shutting out people of color and women from having a political voice.

When NASA sent astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s the agency excluded women from the corps, arguing that only military test pilots—made up exclusively of men—had the right stuff. It was an era in which women were steered away from jobs in science and deemed unqualified for space flight. Eventually, though, NASA recognized its blunder and opened the application process to a wider array of hopefuls, regardless of race or gender. From a candidate pool of 8,000 six elite women were selected in 1978—Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, Shannon Lucid, and Rhea Seddon.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“Robert Fass performs this homage to New York City's northernmost borough, the Bronx, thoughtfully and skillfully. His pace reflects the author's peregrinations and considerations of the only part of the city connected to the continent. His tone is that of an engaged reporter committed to noting things large—the highways that penetrate the Bronx—and small. Through it all, listeners gain an understanding of the truth and irony of the title.… Here is a living portrait with the borough's harsh reputation etched in place and its lasting significance revealed.” —AudioFile Magazine, Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award
“A profound portrait of this storied place . . . Vivid profiles of historical figures . . . The culmination of many years of passionate inquiry, Frazier's deep history—grandly detailed, vibrant, and caring—does right by the resilient, ever-morphing Bronx.” —Booklist (starred review)
“[An] appreciation of a unique area that will appeal to those who have had enough tales of Manhattan.” —Kirkus Reviews

In 1959, America’s great indigenous art form, jazz, reached the height of its power and popularity. James Kaplan’s magnificent 3 Shades of Blue captures how that golden era came to be, and its pinnacle with the recording of Kind of Blue. It’s a book about music, and business, and race, and heroin, and the cities that gave jazz its home, and the Black geniuses behind its rise. It’s an astonishing meditation on creativity and the strange environments where it can flourish most.

Historia
In 1959, America’s great indigenous art form, jazz, reached the height of its power and popularity. James Kaplan’s magnificent 3 Shades of Blue captures how that golden era came to be, and its pinnacle with the recording of Kind of Blue. It’s a book about music, and business, and race, and heroin, and the cities that gave jazz its home, and the Black geniuses behind its rise. It’s an astonishing meditation on creativity and the strange environments where it can flourish most.

Great deep dive into a pinnacle of jazz, marred by author bias against later jazz years

Historia
In 1664, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, had dreams of empire, and their archrivals, the Dutch, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls, the military officer who led the English flotilla bent on destruction, changed his strategy once he encountered Peter Stuyvesant, New Netherland’s canny director general.

Benjamín Labatut’s When We Cease to Understand the World electrified a global readership. A Booker Prize and National Book Award finalist, and one of the New York Times’ Ten Best Books of the Year, it explored the life and thought of a clutch of mathematicians and physicists who took science to strange and sometimes dangerous new realms. In The MANIAC, Labatut has created a tour de force on an even grander scale.

Great Info on the History of the Bronx
Very well researched, and informative. Sometimes the history went so in depth I found myself zoning out, but overall a worthwhile listen.

A cheer for Da Bronx!
Detailed well-researched historical narrative sprinkled with relevant anecdotes. After reading the book, I find myself considerably more knowledgeable about the Bronx, and motivated to do further exploration.
The presentation was descriptive but did not tie together with a cohesive theme. I would’ve preferred more editing with more connections between the stories and chapters.

Where did it come from?
I found the book very interesting and took me through all of the history of The Bronks from the 1600 until now. I loved the branches of the story that weaved from one topic in the 1800 to another in the 2000. I learned a lot and really did enjoy it.

ALL AROUND EXCELLENT
So much history. So many personal stories, none of it boring.
Many famous figures who grew up in the Bronx, the music that originated in the Bronx.
This is a book that every American should read.
I have read and listened to many books in my life (mostly history)) and I consider this one among the best.
The narrator does an outstanding job.
My heartfelt thanks to all involved, JK.

the older history
The history from the 1790s into the early 20th century is fascinating. once the author gets to modern times though, his previously occasional personal political views make their way more and more into the story. Some of the later chapters seem downright whiny.

Excellent historical details about the Bronx from its earliest settlements.
The author downplays the strong violence theme that dominated early rap/hiphop. For all his positive views of the Bronx and its wondrous virtues, inexplicably he appears to live in New Jersey.

Recognition
I loved this book. I like learning about an area. The ties to where I live in NJ were a bonus. I learned so much about the Bronx and HipHop.

Just Beautiful
A beautiful account of my wonderful greatest borough. The narrator does an astounding job as always. I was disappointed every time I had to stop listening. A great job of weaving through time and history of The Bronx. I will definitely listen to it many times again. I just wish Frazier would have went deeper into the greatest neighborhood in the greatest borough, Hunts Point.

An exquisite tapestry woven of thoughts and experience
Frazier always opens himself to thoughtful and considerate exploration. His generosity of his subjects avails him to great value that comes from observing and thinking. This isn't scrappy, quick, off the cuff stuff. I am thinking about starting again. I truly think this book may keep me living in the Bronx.
