Henri Charrière, called ""Papillon,"" for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, was convicted in Paris in 1931 of a murder he did not commit. Sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana, he became obsessed with one goal: escape. After planning and executing a series of treacherous yet failed attempts over many years, he was eventually sent to the notorious prison, Devil's Island, a place from which no one had ever escaped . . . until Papillon. His flight to freedom remains one of the most incredible feats of human cunning, will, and endurance ever undertaken.

Charrière's astonishing autobiography, Papillon, was published in France to instant acclaim in 1968, more than twenty years after his final escape. Since then, it has become a treasured classic -- the gripping, shocking, ultimately uplifting odyssey of an innocent man who would not be defeated.

This is a fantastic book! Just remember that it is from a different time and a different "world" from our own. Henri takes you through a journey as he experiences it. Thank God most of us will never have comparable experiences! Many elements of humanity and inhumanity fill the pages and introduce modern readers to a life that was rarely written about in its day. I first read Papillion almost twenty years ago and some of the imagery and conflict still surfaces from time to time in my thoughts. A very impactful book!

great story

I had to keep reminding myself that it’s based on a true story, and that it’s being read from his notebooks. To think that he endured all of those hardships and still came out on top.

What a fantastic story

Pappion, A movie I had watched 3 times over the years. My father first took me to the theatre to see it. Later I watched it with my son Raymond. He enjoyed it as well. This book is very different, Pappion s time with the Indians was much longer in the book and though it did seem he should have stayed put. But, no he ventures out once more to satisfy some deep need to be free in the eyes of some country. Simply a good listen. The one sad thought I have concerning this book is that Ted Bundy gave it as a gift to his fiance. Fuck Ted. Shall you burn in hell for eternity

Great book A real clasic

To leave a review, compels me—by necessity—to summarize something best left as a whole. The story is mythic in its tropes, epic in its breadth and utterly riveting in it’s entirety. It is a story so good, I would find it difficult to respect anyone who felt otherwise, and as someone with a (typically) open mind, that alone is unusual. If you never read another memoir, read Papillon. If there’s an inch of humanity in you, you will not regret it.

The most incredible, inspiring memoir ever penned

I've read this book a few times over the years and decided to listen this time on audible. This narrator gives this amazing novel the perfect rendition. Along with the unique writing style, the narration makes you feel like you're there with Papi through all his adventures. I wish they also offered Banco, the sequel on audible.

amazing book. perfect narration.

I read the book when I was a young man. And I really enjoyed listening to it as well. The story is fantastic and the narrator does a great work but sometimes the story drags on a bit too long.

Great story - but a bit too long
