Gustav är författare, Martin är en framgångsrik affärsman och chef över familjeföretaget Oppermanns möbler. Edgar är läkare och har nyligen uppfunnit en revolutionerande operationsmetod som är på väg att göra honom världskänd. Lion Feuchtwanger (1884-1958) var en tysk författare av judisk börd som studerade litteratur, filosofi och antropologi i München och Berlin. Han kritiserade ofta samtiden i sina romaner och som jude och vänsterorienterad blev Feuchtwanger vid nazisternas maktövertagande 1933 av med sitt tyska medborgarskap. Hans böcker förbjöds och han gick i landsflykt. Han levde under senare delen av sitt liv i USA.
