Is it necessary to hold certain religious beliefs to benefit from the traditional Twelve-Step
program for addiction recovery? As Buddhist teacher Kevin Griffin says, “When we look
at the underlying meaning of the program, we find a more universal path of spiritual
growth from despair, to hope, to liberation. This same arc is reflected in the Buddha’s
teachings of the Four Noble Truths.” With One Breath, Twelve Steps, this renowned
author reveals how Buddhist wisdom and mindfulness practice clarifies and enhances the
power of the Twelve-Step path to recovery.

Both Buddhism and the Twelve Steps share a common understanding that suffering is
caused by addiction—or attachment, in Buddhist terms—and that liberating ourselves
from our cravings brings an end to suffering. In these six sessions, Kevin interprets each
of the Steps through the lens of the Buddha’s wisdom, revealing an inclusive, practical
approach for finding freedom from self-destructive behavior. Along the way he helps
shed new light on the controversial aspects of the Twelve Steps, offering a fresh
understanding of “higher power,” free will, the process of forgiveness, and more.

“Addiction intensifies the causes of suffering so they can seem unendurable,” says Kevin
Griffin. “But the Buddha’s antidote to suffering has the power to work for anyone, no
matter what their circumstances.” One Breath, Twelve Steps offers an accessible and
time-honored path for overcoming addiction—and a framework for helping us become
the person we want to be.

I actually got this book by mistake, I thought I was getting a book on the 12 steps but I had no idea that this book was directly related to Buddhism. So initially I was a little disappointed, but it was actually a really good mistake, I guess God knows why everything in life happens for a reason.
I had zero knowledge about Buddhism, nor was I really interested in it, I am a firm believer in God and Jesus, but I do not like attachments to any specific religion, so I decided to give the book a shot. And, after listening to the first chapter, I just kept on going, and realized that you don't have to be any specific religion to listen to this book, the way he relates the 12 steps to the teachings of Buddhism is actually really cool, I really enjoyed this and it was a learning experience. I also really enjoyed doing the meditations and is a book that I will listen to many times over. I recommend it for anyone that wants to look at the 12 steps from a different perspective

Awesome, puts things in perspective

For someone with almost 3 years sobriety and trying to find ways to blend the 12 steps into my dharma studies and practice I found this audiobook so valuable. I wrote pages of notes to go back to. It encouraged me to purchase his other books and seek out a meditation retreat in my local area in 2019 he is hosting. It was truly that impactful. I love my meditation and yoga practice because it helped get me sober, the 12 steps have kept me sober. Now blending them together i think is my magical formula for long term sobriety.
