Acerca de esta escucha
A celebrated science and health reporter offers a wry, bracingly honest account of living with anxiety.
A racing heart. Difficulty breathing. Overwhelming dread. Andrea Petersen was first diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at the age of 20, but she later realized that she had been experiencing panic attacks since childhood. With time her symptoms multiplied. She agonized over every odd physical sensation. She developed fears of driving on highways, going to movie theaters, even licking envelopes. Although having a name for her condition was an enormous relief, it was only the beginning of a journey to understand and master it - one that took her from psychiatrists' offices to yoga retreats to the Appalachian Trail.
Woven into Petersen's personal story is a fascinating look at the biology of anxiety and the groundbreaking research that might point the way to new treatments. She compares psychoactive drugs to nondrug treatments, including biofeedback and exposure therapy. And she explores the role that genetics and the environment play in mental illness, visiting top neuroscientists and tracing her family history - from her grandmother, who, plagued by paranoia, once tried to burn down her own house, to her young daughter, in whom Petersen sees shades of herself.
Brave and empowering, this is essential listening for anyone who knows what it means to live on edge.

Drawing on his own long-standing battle with anxiety, Stossel presents an astonishing history, at once intimate and authoritative, of the efforts to understand the condition from medical, cultural, philosophical, and experiential perspectives. He ranges from the earliest medical reports of Galen and Hippocrates, through later observations by Robert Burton and Søren Kierkegaard, to the investigations by great nineteenth-century scientists, such as Charles Darwin, William James, and Sigmund Freud, as they began to explore its sources and causes.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

As much as we might try to resist, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath, the end of a day, the end of a relationship, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

Brave, But Lacking
Petersen shows courage in telling her story of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, but her lack of interest in psychotherapy and reliance on benzos make me suspicious there's a real cure to this anxiety she does not wish to address, which can only come with deep therapy, that which she avoids, thus perpetuating the anxiety. Interesting, but not totally satisfying.

A whole new look at my anxiety and other's
I couldnt stop listening to this book. Andrea had me hooked from the beginning! This turned out to be the most wonderful mixture of story telling and research. I recommend this for anyone who is trying to understand anxiety better, either for yourself, others, or both! I am sad it is over, and so glad I listened to it! If you listen to it, and find moments triggering I promise its worth it to see it all the way through.

Good but not what I expected.
Although the book was very good, it was more of an autobiography and medication information than an insight to to self help for panic and anxiety. The book was very relatable, just not what I was looking for.

Admirable Work
Peterson narrates her own story and does an excellent job keeping a steady, measured pace in relaying details of events that obviously terrified her at the time. Surely not everyone can read their own work. She has a good voice, and could read other stories too.

Absolutely recommend
Of all the anxiety books I’ve read, I connect more with this one. It’s very honest, raw, real. It’s good for someone struggling with anxiety because the author explains how she copes with it. Also good for people who know someone who is struggling, so they can better understand and know how to help. I’d like to thank the author for her honesty and strength to share her story with us, bringing us hope.
