Off Grid and Free: My Path to the Wilderness is the story of the journey Ron Melchiore undertook as a young man from the city, first to homesteading in northern Maine and then to living in the bush of northern Saskatchewan. He has lived off grid since approximately 1980 and speaks candidly about the joys and the tribulations of his chosen lifestyle. In this adventure, Ron shares the diversity of his experiences in an easy, humorous, and sometimes harrowing narrative. The book includes his hiking of the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail in winter, bicycling across the United States, homesteading off grid, the terror of being surrounded by a wildfire, surprise encounters with bears, and more. For listeners with an outdoors spirit, people with an off grid and self-sufficiency bent, and dreamers who like to hear about adventure, Ron hopes to inspire others to "take the road less traveled".

Down Home Memoir
Wonderful book about the life and struggles of one man's (and later his wife) desire to be away from people and close to creation. If you are looking for groundbreaking knowledge on how to live in the wilderness this may not be the book for you, but if you are wishing to feel in the New England voice of the author, the absolute love for the wilderness and its simple grandeur this is a read for you! I really wish this author would write more about the details of how he made his life out there possible. Much like the first work of any author, you may think the structure of this book is basic, but look beyond that and see the heart of one, truly and fully dedicated to the wilderness! Thankyou, Ron! Can't wait to hear more!

A very interesting look into a secluded life
Overall I enjoyed the book. It was engaging at times and gave a picture of the trials and pleasure of life off the grid.
He tended to jump around in the timeline a bit, and it made it hard to fallow if I had any interruptions while listening.
What was really striking to me was how accomplished (through hiking to cycling the country) he was and the adventures he went on.

Great adventure
I really liked the fact that the author narrated the audiobook himself. Highly recommended for anyone that loves the outdoor lifestyle.

WOW!
Was not what I thought this book was going to be, but I was pleasantly surprised. The narrator did a great job, though I can see if some folk don't like him. His voice really adds to the story telling, and I felt like I learned some from this book. Highly recommend to anyone who likes living off grid ideas, or wants to learn more.

awesome
would love to meet this guy and check out his setup .. although my wife would never go for it I would love to live a life like this ... I wish he would write a sequel

Definitely enjoyed the book
My husband and I certainly enjoyed the book and the little laughs we had along the way with the humor. We are homesteaders so we get it not quite as much as he does since they live in the bush. We live on a 30 acre farm and do grow a lot of our food. It is a great read if this too is your dream or you would like to know what it is like to live in the Bush. Thank you
