Resumen del Editor

Welcome to the Black Mountain Camp for Boys!

Summer, 1989. It is a time for splashing in the lake and exploring the wilderness, for nine teenagers to bond together and create friendships that could last the rest of their lives.

But among this group there is a young man with a secret—a secret that, in this time and place, is unthinkable to his peers.

When the others discover the truth, it will change each of them forever. They will all have blood on their hands.

Odd Man Out is a heart-wrenching tale of bullies and bigotry, a story that explores what happens when good people don't stand up for what's right. It is a tale of how far we have come...and how far we still have left to go.

The narrator’s portrayal of each character

This was such a powerful story depicted in a very realistic way. The story telling and imagery was engaging although I wish the story delved a bit deeper into each character. That being said, the narrator did an excellent job at representing the many characters throughout by showcasing each character’s distinct voices. Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book and would recommend for anyone looking for a quick and gruesome read.

Coming of Age Horror

James Newman is an authors that never disappoints. ODD MAN OUT, is a story of a young man who is forced to attend a summer camp while his parents go on a vacation to Europe. He has a lot of the insecurities a 15 year old boy has and definitely does not want to be the odd man out.

Hard hitting story, great narration

The book deals with tough subject matter - but it is an important story. After reading the book, I can say that the narration brings the text to a new level.

More traumatic tragedy than horror

Well written and well narrated, but a tragic story that will linger on your heart.

Upsetting, thought provoking

I listened to Odd Man Out in one go. it was upsetting, but didn't take the violence to that place where it seems like it's supposed to be fun or something. It had me thinking all about times when I chose not to speak up because I was scared of the bullies or of being ostracized. I thought it was really well written. The narration was wonderful. Curtis pulled me right into the story, created distinct characters, and really made me feel it.

it's important that everyone listen to this.

This is a hard book to listen to, however everyone should. Even though this book isn't based on anyone's true story, it could very likely happen because HATE is rampant in our society. People hate other people for many stupid reasons and they use Bible verses to prove they're justified! I'm a Christian, but I don't believe that God hates anyone! Please listen to this.

The Lost Boys at Summer Camp

This tale of a nightmare experienced at the Black Mountain camp for boys is an eye opening view of how bigotry and pack mentality can spiral out of control.

James Newman wrote a powerful, heartwrenching and believable story. This is my introduction to his writing and I'll be reading more of his work.

Curtis Michael Hollands' performance is amazing and his style captured the true horror of the story.

Two thumbs up...I recommend.

Ohhh…man!!! This one hurt like a mother….

The topic of this story is a very sad and what makes it sad is that this stuff really does happen!
I personally know what it’s like to have someone you care about being brutally bullied for being who they are. As early as 5 years old, I have been sticking up for my brother and fighting for him. I remember throwing a rock at some boy’s forehead for making my brother cry.
At that age I didn’t know my brother was gay. I just knew he was my brother and I love him!
I would never ever be able to sit on the sidelines and watch as someone bullied him! NEVER!

This story is very brutal but we need stories like these. They can educate people on what to do or what not to do. It’s heartbreaking to read so please, beware.

This is my third James Newman book and he has not disappointed. And the audiobook was done right!

Thanks to Encyclopocalypse Publications I was able to listen to the audiobook of ODD MAN OUT by James Newman and narrated by Curtis Michael Holland.

I’m an avid audiobook listener and I have an appreciation for the production process and the voice actors behind the narration.
Reading books are awesome, of course, but sometimes it’s more convenient to listen to an audiobook. I actually get more emotional listening to an audiobook, especially when it’s done right! All it takes is a great story being read by a great narrator!

A short but powerful story!

When Dennis Munch is sent to a pilot camp he is supposed to attend and give his opinion on how much he liked the camp. On his first day there he runs in to Wesley Wesmoore a boy he was best friends with in the fifth grade but now at 15 he really doesn’t want to be there and certainly doesn’t want to reconnect with Wesley. Also attending the camp is Sean, a bully and a tyrant, before it is all over their lives will be intertwined and Dennis will wish he could’ve been a better friend. This book was so good and what makes it so powerful is it is true to life as this has happened maybe not at a camp but I know in a park in Texas and in the field in Wyoming. They’re not rare they’re just not told. This was a very powerful story and although short will linger in your mind even after you’re done with the book. I also thought the narrator had a great tone and really sets the mood for the characters. A truly great story! Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.

Gut wrenching novella

Excuse me while I go wipe my tears. Wow! This book hurt. James Newman delivered a powerful punch to the gut.

“Odd Man Out”, by James Newman, is a coming of age novella about hatred and intolerance. This fast-paced novella tackles a horrific subject.
A group of male teens are part of a focus group at Black Mountain Camp. Boys will be boys, especially when they are left with minimal supervision. When a discovery is made that one boy is different, chaos happens.

“Odd Man Out” is a highly emotional story. It was hard to get through the violence and bullying. The subject may yet deliver a powerful message.
