If you want to discover the captivating history of Notre-Dame de Paris, then keep reading...
It was with horror and sadness that the people of the world opened their social media or switched on their televisions on April 15th, 2019, only to see terrifying pictures of smoke and flames roaring around one of the most iconic outlines in France: That of Notre-Dame de Paris. The cathedral attracts more visitors than the Eiffel Tower (an estimated 13 million annually), and it has become a favorite with tourists and Parisians alike. Mass is still conducted there regularly, and when the fire destroyed part of Notre-Dame, all of the world mourned.
There is more to Notre-Dame, however than just a tragic fire. Almost nine centuries of history lie behind its weathered towers, and its history is closely interlinked with that of France and its people. Its story has rung out through the ages as one of hope and survival. Its characters range from novelists to saints, from daredevils to kings, from generals to emperors. Its themes stretch across the spectrum, from humanity's greatest darkness to the warmth of the human spirit; it tells stories about exceptional brutality and exceptional grace, of the greatest terror of them all, and of dauntless courage.
The world watched Notre-Dame burn. Now, it's time for the world to hear its story.
In Notre-Dame de Paris: A Captivating Guide to One of the Most Famous Catholic Cathedrals of Medieval Europe, you will discover topics such as:
- Before Notre-Dame
- The Construction of a Cathedral
- A Curse and a Coronation
- The First Ransacking
- Louis Times Two
- Surviving Revolution
- The Emperor and the Hunchback
- Two Warrior Women
- Withstanding the War
- Part of Us Burning
- And much, much, more!

Warrior. Ruler. Patron of the arts and language. Terrorist. Brutal oppressor. Protector of the good. Guardian of Christendom. Father of Europe. There are so many different ways in which Charlemagne can be described, and yet, the man himself is often seen as an enigma. Depending on the viewpoint of history, he could have been either a monster or a guardian angel. Yet, as with most men, the truth lies somewhere in between. The truth is that he was human.

Historia
From about the ninth to fifth centuries BCE, the population of Greece grew unprecedentedly large, expanding from about 800,000 people to as many as 13 million. About a quarter million of these lived in Athens. The average size of urban households during this period grew considerably, a fact that suggests that food was suddenly available in excesses sufficient to keep larger families healthy and alive much more effectively than just a millennium earlier. Bigger families meant bigger armies and larger communities that would eventually grow into the metropolises of Classical Greece.

Nero’s extravagance has become nothing short of legendary. In its day, it was incredibly destructive to his people, particularly after the Great Fire of Rome - a fire that he may have even started. Instead of assisting the ten districts that had been damaged by the fire, Nero took advantage of the extra space to build himself a golden palace. He murdered, among others, his own mother, his ex-wife, and his stepbrother. He was additionally a rapist, a child molester, and a brutal abuser.

If you want to discover the captivating history of Armenia, then pay attention...The tale of Armenia has its beginnings as a glorious ancient kingdom, one that commanded the respect of nations as mighty as Egypt and Babylonia. For a long and ugly part of its history, Armenia struggled under the yokes of one empire after another. Yet through it all, Armenia, time and time again, emerged as a nation with a powerful identity, one that caused much grief over the years, but one that still remains a pillar of strength to its people in good times and in bad.

During 1915 to 1923, one and a half million Armenian people were deported and killed in the most appalling ways comprehensible. They were ripped from their homes (in a land where they had lived for longer than history can tell, a land so old that many speculate it was the site of the biblical Garden of Eden) and sent off on death marches across the blistering Syrian Desert. They were shot on the thresholds of the houses where they were raising their children. They were butchered with swords in gruesome ways in order to dishearten those left alive.

Beginning with Charlemagne, the great and educated king who would serve as an inspiration for world leaders from Frederick II to Adolf Hitler, the Holy Roman Empire’s intricate ties with the Roman Catholic Church would provide for plenty of excitement and drama in its early years. However, as the empire staggered through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, it would eventually be forced to declare its allegiance with a new way of thinking: Protestantism.

Europe’s past is characterized by fighting and warfare, and it is punctuated with great works of art, philosophy, science, and technology. Even its recent history is much the same - that’s why, so much of the globe was once ruled by European monarchies. Despite all the infighting and territorial exploits, Europeans have managed to create some of the most beautiful pieces of literature, architecture, political structures, and ideas the world has ever seen.

Historia
If you want to discover the captivating history of the Middle Ages, then pay attention...One of the least understood periods of European history occurred between the 6th century and the 14th or 15th century (depending on which historian you ask). Commonly called the Middle Ages, this was a time period of extreme change for Europe, beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire. To a continent that had seen a drastic shift in the power structure, the world seemed to be particularly harsh. Rome had been a major player across Europe for well over a millennium. Then it was gone.

So much knowledge!
when it comes to churches, I have very mixed feelings about them and the religions that back them, but as someone expanding their knowledge of history... this book blew me away! I knew of Norte-Dame, of course and that it was old, but wow! Most intriguing to me though was the discovery of the Pillar of the Boatmen.... this is something I would really like to know more about!

Maybe a bit too narrow a subject for 10 chapters
Notre dame de Paris has a very intriguing and storied history and I learned some very interesting facts about it.
As usual for Captivating History books there is an intro, 10 chapters, and a conclusion. These are shorter chapters as you would expect but feels a bit forced for this particular subject. My bigger issue is how the author continually personifies the building. Some might enjoy this style of storing telling but I would rather have it told in less of a historical dramatization style.
Style notwithstanding, I did enjoy the content of the book and as usual, Jason Zenobia's performance was solid and easily understood at higher speech rate. (I listened to the entire book while out walking my dog).

So interesting!
I was so sad when I heard that Notre Dame had been damaged by fire. It is such an important part of Christian, French and European history. This book made an interesting attempt to retell its story, including in it are the narratives of the people and events that contributed to that history. My husband and I visited Notre Dame on our honeymoon back in 1984 and we have such wonderful memories of the structure and its grandeur. I'm glad this book is around to help folks like me who are fascinated by history to get a glimpse of important moments, people, and places.

The real Notre-Dame
Most people in the world know about Notre-DAme but most of them only know a picturesque point of view from the front of this majestic building, they also know it is very old. The true history as this book reveals is much greater and more interesting. Here you can see the first beginnings of the idea of this creation, the years of construction and the various times that it has been up-dated. It explains how it has survived wars and revolutions and yet still stood for hundreds of years as a monument to mans soul.

Keeping Your Faith and Hope
The Story really started off in History in which it seems like until the end of this Read you get a lot of names, dates, history.
I would think many would like this Read it has much detailed but yet very short on much of the Chapters.
I did not really get motivated by the Narrator, he was to slow and his reading had no Expression in much of the Read.
Overall, I’m glad I have this in my Library.
Amen
