Karlen interviewed Prince for three Rolling Stone cover stories, wrote “3 Chains o’ Gold”, Prince’s “rock video opera”, as well as the star’s last testament. According to Prince's former fiancée, Susannah Melvoin, Karlen was “the only reporter who made Prince sound like what he really sounded like”.

I generally prefer when authors narrate their audiobooks. Touré takes this to the highest level.
He reads each person’s quotes with a vibe that resonates with the words as well as the speaker. Best example is when he imitates Vanity’s condescending tone when she met Susannah.
I’ve been a Prince fan since 1979. This book offered insight into Prince’s childhood and adult life with stories I hadn’t heard before.
Prince was a genius. He was fortunate to have people around him who often sacrificed their own happiness as well as emotional health to support his vision.
Touré’s light shines bright on all. A must listen for all Prince fans. And a recommended listen for anyone who simply enjoys a strong, well researched biography.
