His journey is meticulously documented through detailed accounts of his time secluded behind the doors of the recording studio as well as his days on tour. With unprecedented access to the musicians, singers, and studio engineers who knew Prince best, including members of the Revolution and the Time, Duane Tudahl weaves an intimate saga of an eccentric genius and the people and events who helped shape the groundbreaking music he created.

From Sunset Sound Studios' daily recording logs and the Warner Bros. vault of information, Tudahl uncovers hidden truths about the origins of songs such as "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", and "Raspberry Beret" and also reveals details about Prince's unreleased outtakes. This definitive chronicle of Prince's creative brilliance during 1983 and 1984 provides a new experience of the Purple Rain album as an integral part of Prince's life and the lives of those closest to him.

I’ve read several Prince books and this one is the best. Incredible detail! The story of his rise to his apex is told thru the work he did every single day.

The best Prince book so far

There's no way for me to write different reviews for each book in this series. Every volume (and future volume) is essential. Collectors usually like to buy the first edition hardcovers. As a completist, I want the hardcover and the softcover. In this series though, if you have to choose only one.. it's the softcover. Duane goes above and beyond on the updated versions between hard and softcovers (Buy them both if you can. He works really hard on these books and we want more of them).

This series of books is so deserved for an artist like Prince. There are a few session books done for other artists but there is no one else like Prince. His creative output is beyond a professional career and more a life lived in music. These books are so densely packed with information about Prince and his recording life that they can only cover two years at a time. The work Duane has put into his research and writing is hard to believe even as you read through these volumes. They are intimidating in size but so rewarding to take your time with. I do have to say, Duane has me stressed out wondering if he'll be able to finish through Prince's entire discography. To me, Duane is the George R.R. Martin of session books.

Keep writing Duane. Your books are a joy I never imagined would exist and then be sitting on my bookshelf.

Thank you, Duane!

A detailed look into Prince’s process. Not only insightful technical information but stories about the kind of person he was and how he approached music and life. Great Book!

So much information!

To the author, I wanted to let you know how thankful I am that you put this book together.

Your book stirred up a lot of emotions in me; that’s a good thing. I think the narrator’s name is Ron Butler, he does a nice job as well.

When he was reading about the opening night in Detroit at the Joe Louis arena, I could close my eyes, and just for a moment I feel like I was back in time...

Thankful

Dwayne Tudahl’s Prince manual sets the bar very high! The sheer amount of detail included in this book representative of just two years of an over 30 year career is key and exhaustively beautiful! This is a must read for a Prince fan or musician!

Tour de Force!
