Great listen!

I really enjoyed the storytelling and the loose historical fictional aspects of the book. One of my first audible horror books and I truly enjoyed it. Woke up last night thinking there was something watching me sleep... So there is that. haha

Thriller

Classic Erik Larson. It took me more than a chapter to understand what was happening because I enjoyed the detail of character development. Caught myself on many occasions trying to guess what will happen next. I credit Julian Rhind-Tutt with superior narration skills. Enjoy the listen!

Gripping.- but don't listen to it by yourself

Alone after dark. The narration is compelling and increasingly urgent. Larson's language connotes 1905, the time in which the story is set. I hope Larson writes more ghost stories.

Wonderful Read! Atmospheric and unexpected.

This is one of those books that builds continuously, so keep reading it if the first chapter seems slow...it's a wonderfully creepy book. I loved it and has a fabulous narrator!

Great performance; the story not so much

I’ve really enjoyed each of Erik Larson’s nonfiction works so I started this with high hopes. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Boring from start to finish.

Good ghost story read

I thought this ONLY on audiobook by Erik Larson was very good. It does start a bit slow with much detail in the characters' development, background, experiences and information about each.
About two thirds in the story it gets very intense and delivers the scare punch! Enjoy!

Good historical tie ins

It was a good story with good historical references, tidying up at the end seemed a little rushed after the build up. Overall a good story though.

Dry but interesting

This book is like eating tasty crackers with nothing to wash it down with. I was hoping for something scarier, with more payoff. It meandered, dropping little crumbs that never quite lead anywhere. Still, I stuck with it which says a lot. The narrator did a great job keeping me engaged.

An actually good supernatural/horror period piece

As an audio-only production, this work was perfectly captivating if listened to in a calm, somewhat dimly lit room in the evenings, just relaxing. This was definitely not the sort of thing to read while doing other tasks, or while trying to lie down in bed. You have to really listen and get into the story and the characters.

It's good horror, classic and mysterious and supernatural, but also a period piece. He does a great job of capturing not just the true elements of the period, but the entire feel of the era and genre. I appreciate that he built the characters off of real people from the time, and included references to true events and such.

I know some reviews say the story is slow or that the characters are flat or unbelievable, and I don't get that at all. To me, the characters and their thoughts and instincts are more real than modern love stories or any King novel. The weird love triangle for Frost felt believable and relatable, moreso than any romance or YA novel about love and relationships. Maybe there's a personality disposition in me that I connect to, but that just means it was well-written for me.

Entertaining but meh...

I had a hard time following the narrator. Not a fan of them.
The story, while entertaining was also meh. Stick to what you're good at. Which is, intensive research on incredible true stories and deliver it in the way only you can. The nonfiction stories are told in such a way that it's as fun as fiction. I wish he would write one on the atrocious "Scientific Research" and experimentation that the horrible Nazis did on the Jewish population during the Holocaust. it would be tough to stomach but an incredibly interesting true story.
