THE NEW THRILLER FROM MILLION COPY SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER MICHAEL CONNELLY

LAPD Detective Stilwell has been forced out of the Homicide department to a dead-end post on Santa Catalina Island.

It might be an idyllic holiday destination but Stilwell knows it's a backwater to keep him out of sight and out of mind. But the usual weekend case-load of petty drunken violence is disturbed by a report of a body found in the harbour, weighed down by an anchor.

Driven to prove a point to his superiors back on the mainland, Stilwell will cross every line of protocol and jurisdiction to solve the murder case.

It's sink or swim, as failure will cost him everything, and finding the killer will reveal the dark heart of his new home.

But on a small island with big secrets - someone is always watching...

Without providing too much spoilers, the book is very disappointing, not what I would expect from the great Michael Connelly. The idea of locating the officer on an Island near LA and not in the large LA area is appealing but the author does not make much of it. You don't come to know much about the people that live there (besides the minimum that is needed for the plot). The characters are flat and the plot is superficial, the characters and not interesting, Looks like it was written by an AI and not an author with such a credit as he gained with me in his other Lincoln Lawyer and Harry Bosch plots. Sad.

Not what I would expect from Michael Connelly

I was worried at first about the fact that there was no Harry Bosch character ....but was quickly put at ease. This is a well crafted story with an interesting plot - and a chance to get to know a new young police officer in a totally fresh location. A very satisfying ecperience

Another gem from Michael Connelly.

Had to drop and go back to it for some reason didn’t hit the first time. Loved the setting though, having spent childhood summers on the island.

Relative to Bosch, this story was underwhelming with a weak theme. I’ll remain a fan and hope for better.

Underwhelming

Comparison with Harry Bosch is of course inevitable… The Stillwell character has A LOT of Bosch in him. Seems like a restart of the male detective character when Bosch seems to have reached the end of the road. Not a bad thing, although maybe they are a bit too similar to offer a fresh start. The story also follows Connellys Bosch police procedural style. If you like the Harry Bosch novels and still find them good reading/listening, you will most likely like this one too. Being a Bosch fan myself, I enjoyed it. They found a really good narrator in Will Damron. I absolutely loved Titus Wellivers narration of Bosch —his voice practically is Hieronymus Bosch at this point—but putting him here would’ve been a bridge too far. This procedural already walks and talks like Bosch’s long-lost cousin, and with Welliver behind the mic, I might’ve filed a missing identity report. Still, despite the resemblance, it stands solidly on its own. A worthy listen.

Another solid novel from Connelly
