New Take on the YA Werewolf Novel

This story focuses on a pack of werewolves who terrorize Omaha, Nebraska. The protagonist is half-Asian girl named Mia. She has extremely good luck and escape many life of death situations. The best part of the book is the author's portrayal of werewolves. They are presented in a fresh way. They aren't strictly evil, just like humans some are good and some are bad. So the reader can sympathize with the werewolves and can also sympathize with the humans that are prey.

Scary, exciting YA horror thriller

This book reminds me of the horror movies I saw as a kid. These guys are mean, with big teeth, and they eat people. Great stuff! I couldn’t listen to it for at least an hour before bedtime!

The teen romance grabbed me less, but was appropriate to the story. Narrator did a good job.

Great New Series

It’s really difficult to write a good werewolf story focused on high school kids—at least it looked that way before I read Night of the Hidden Fang. The problem isn’t that the high school kids often live a very separate life from their out of touch parents, they do. It also isn’t a problem that no one would believe the high school kids if they started talking about werewolves prowling the neighborhood, they wouldn’t. No, the break down usually comes when the high school kids insist on solving the whole problem by themselves and somehow get away with doing it without the adults ever finding out. That isn’t the way T. James Logan handles this problem in Night of the Hidden Fang and as a result he was able to surprise me again and again in the novel. At times it felt like he was “breaking the rules” and that was very good for his story.

Mia is a believable high school girl who never feels like she fits in. Because her dad was in the military before he joined the FBI, she hasn’t lived in any one place very long and she doesn’t have many good friends. She’s bullied by some of the more popular girls and suffers endless amounts of teen angst over the boy she likes but feels like she could never have. Then strange things start happening—disappearances, body parts appearing, unsettling men, some mysterious boys—and suddenly we’re not in high school anymore. (Except, Mia is, of course, and manages to never lose all her angst no matter what terrible things are happening around her.)

After a slightly slow beginning, the plot starts charging forward and never stops until the end of the novel. There were a couple of very big surprises for me—shocks that I just never believed would occur—and one very obvious plot line that never happened. Both the shock and the author’s restraint greatly enhanced the novel.

If you’re looking for a new take on the werewolf story, you should give Night of the Hidden Fang a try.

Teen Romance with "Bite"

The Prologue is pure Horror, then Chapter One goes to a Teen Romance. This back and forth between the genres is disconcerting but the overall effect turns our pretty darn good! The book has a very different theme to werewolves, more science than magic. Give it a listen if you want a different take on horror, and like teen romance as well.

Teenage Werewolves with Real Bite!

An excellent book that very effectively mixes teenage romance and werewolves. Mia is the new girl in school with a teenage crush on a handsome boy in her class who she discovers may also have an interest in her. Just as her new life is starting to look up her best friend goes missing while jogging. It is then things really start to take a turn for the worst, people and zoo animals are being killed and Mia begins to believe that werewolves may be responsible for the unexplained deaths. Mia’s father who is an FBI agent with a military background seems to be working long hours on an unexplained project and her aunt Sarah, a government agent with a secret, unexpectantly shows up for a visit. While all this is happening three strange boys convince Mia that they need a place to hide while on the run from a crazy wrestling coach at their school. The boys convey a crazy werewolf story to her that just might be true.

The action is first rate and will keep you on the edge of your seat. As the first volume in a werewolf trilogy you will be hooked, looking forward to the next installment. Becky Parker does an excellent job with the narration.

Also included is a short story at the end of the audiobook “Fangs in the Dark” which provides background on the transformation of the boys into a pack of werewolves. I’m not sure why T. James Logan decided to provide the werewolf background as a short story instead of making it part of the main book but I’m glad that it was included as it is an important part of the story. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Werewolves of Omaha

This was an entertaining book. Mia has recently moved to Omaha with her parents and is struggling to fit in to her new school. Even though she has lived many places due to her father's military career, it never gets any easier. When her best friend disappears, things start to get interesting!

Mia meets up with a group of three boys who are standing naked in a corn field. From there, she finds herself drawn into a world she never would have thought possible.

I love a good werewolf story and this one was pretty good. It reminded me a little of the movie "Lost Boys" and the author has done a good job in meshing life as a teenager with werewolves. The book is full of just the right amount of humor to keep it from becoming too dire.

The audiobook included a bonus short story that explained some of the beginning of this outbreak and I enjoyed it almost as much as the featured book.

The narrator did a great job and captured the emotions and tensions perfectly. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good werewolf story and even though it is a YA book, us older adults would enjoy it, too.
