Cole Balek is a liar.

Okay, not really. He just makes you think he’s sawing someone in half or that he’s trapped in a trunk. All Cole wants is to continue the love of magic that he and his late father shared by becoming the best tween magician in the Las Vegas area.

But when Cole and his mother get a mysterious note from a rare book collector, he’s forced to search among his father’s belongings for A Lesson in Magick, an old book of spells connected to an ancient group of magickers. What he finds instead are a series of coded clues his dad left for him - clues that send Cole and his best friends Ethan and Sanchez on a wild scavenger hunt throughout Las Vegas, in search of A Lesson in Magick. Cole must use every hack and magic trick he’s got, because he knows that if the book falls into the wrong hands, disaster will strike.

As danger mounts, who can this clever, funny, and determined group of friends really trust in a world filled with professional magicians, strange professors, and scary Elvis impersonators?

Cole and his mother are living in Las Vegas, trying to make it through life and heal from the death of his father. One day, Cole's mother gets a letter from a rare bookseller who is interested in a book that his father owned. When Cole begins going through his father's things to find the book, he doesn't find the book. What he finds instead is a clue. This clue starts Cole and his friends on a scavenger hunt that has them traveling back and forth across the city of Las Vegas in the hopes of finding where his father hid the book.

Unfortunately, the scavenger hunt is not without its dangers. Very quickly, Cole notices that he's being followed, and an early run-in with several Elvis impersonators shakes up Cole and impresses upon him the true level of danger involved in this hunt. Not only that, but with everything happening, Cole is having trouble figuring out who he can trust.

This was such a fun listen! The clues that Cole was following really illustrated the depth of relationship he had with his father and how much fun they had working on illusions to perform. The number of misdirections had my poor brain spinning at times, but it was still really fun to listen to Cole work through all the clues. If you like mysteries or scavenger hunts, I definitely encourage you to listen to this audiobook.

An epic scavenger hunt across Las Vegas

Love the concept that Las Vegas is the magic capital of the US - I think I hit my forehead with a "doh" because why didn't I think of that before!! It's like the baby cousin of Hogwarts but no witches or warlocks. And underneath the mystery and comical friends (they may grow up to be in "The Hangover" yet...) there are heartwarming father-son moments. I will never look at Elvis impersonators the same way again, giggle!!

I forgot that Josh Gad was the celebrity narrator - kudos on his delivery.

Elvis and Dolly's

The story itself was very entertaining. However, I could not help but picture Olaf from Frozen as I listened to The narrator's voice. Also, there were a few discrepancies in the writing of the story itself that really made me wish my OCD didn't pick up so easily. So, if you don't mind a villain's gun being in two places at the same time, etc. then I definitely recommend this book. All in all, it's a great one for teenagers, young adults, and magical beings alike.

the story is pretty good. Seems like the voices changed toward the end; like everyone's voice got mixed up with everyone else's. That part was a bit disconcerting but otherwise, pretty interesting.

great story, great voicing

The kids though this was a good story. I'd say age 7+. Adults will be entertained too.

Fun Story

I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter and the 39 clues, and this book reminds me of both. I still have a few hours left of my listen but I love it. I wish it was available as an ebook

Great book!

I enjoyed it somewhat, but found the story/plot to be far far too predictable. Of course the nice-seeming guy was the bad guy. Of course the off-putting guy was the good guy. The main character and his two friends were good, but far too often the narrator would keep things from the reader for no reason. The plot also revolves around the characters figuring out clues, and this was really boring at times since I as the reader didn't know enough to figure out the hints myself and just had to wait for them to figure it out (since I knew they would at some point). I get the idea behind it's funny to have characters chased all over vagas by elvis impersonators, but why would anyone hire someone so flashy to tail anyone? There are multiple things that don't add up for me, but the story was enjoyable enough for me to finish the book once. It won't be something I revisit over and over though, certainly not a favorite.

Predictable but cute

When I first read the outline of this story I thought it might be a little juvenile. I was wrong. While it was written for a younger audience it is very an enjoyable story for anyone who enjoys a good tale. I had the villain pegged fairly early in the story – but that didn’t distract from the balance of the book. I loved way author used the Elvis's and later the Dolly’s to add come “color”.
The narrator – Josh Gad, was very good. I didn’t realize until after I finished the book that he was the voice of Olaf from Frozen and played LeFou in Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (one of my favorite characters in the movie).

YA, but enjoyable for all ages
