Nothing sucks the romance out of world travel like a boyfriend who may or may not have broken up with you in a hotel room in Brussels. Jane Jameson's sexy sire Gabriel has always been unpredictable, but the seductive, anonymous notes that await him at each stop of their international vacation, coupled with his evasive behavior over the past few months, finally push Jane onto the next flight home to Half Moon Hollow -- alone, upset, and unsure whether Gabriel just ended their relationship without actually telling her.
Now the children's-librarian-turned-vampire is reviving with plenty of Faux Type O, some TLC from her colorful friends and family, and her plans for a Brave New Jane. Step One: Get her newly renovated occult bookstore off the ground. Step Two: Support her best friend, Zeb, and his werewolf bride as they prepare for the impending birth of their baby...or litter. Step Three: Figure out who's been sending her threatening letters, and how her hostile pen pal is tied to Gabriel. Because for this nice girl, surviving a broken heart is suddenly becoming a matter of life and undeath.

Jane graduated in 98 from a Kentucky high school, as did I, and has a snarkiness I can only describe as the result of someone trained on after-school episodes of Animaniacs, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and being well-versed in Austen and other classics (right down to the Firth-Ehly version of Pride and Prejudice). She's the oddball of the family because of her quick wit and knowledge of random facts, and to top everything off, I get every single reference she makes right down to the way southern women make punch for showers. The cherry on top of this creepy resemblance is the author went to Western Kentucky University, as did I. (The one step difference mentioned above is she took library studies whereas I took theatre).
That's where the simlarities end, however, as I do not have to put up with the family members Jane does, nor do I have a best guy friend married to a werewolf. Or a vampire boyfriend... let alone being one myself. And, unlike Jane, I have the sometimes brutally honest ability to say what's on my mind, which, if Jane was capable of doing, we would not have this hilarious series.
Jane's inability to communicate properly (as is sometimes the problem with most protagonists) gets her into yet another pickle. Gabriel too, since he refuses to tell her whats going on with this random letters he gets. Quite a lot of non-communication goes on in the book and finally comes flooding out of characters like they were given truth pills before their big exits. Even Jenny gets to reveal her inner turmoil. I believe the Pixar people would call this "monologuing." Yet, in taking this novel lightly as I have from the beginning, it was an enjoyable experience. 5 stars.

What made the experience of listening to Nice Girls Don't Live Forever the most enjoyable?
I think it's tragic that Harper remains relatively obscure while the big time authors like Harrison get all the limelight. If you enjoy this book, know that the series continues beyond book 3 but isn't available on audible. What other book might you compare Nice Girls Don't Live Forever to and why?
