My Uncle Gloria is his nephew Steven's story. Told from his perspective, it is a gritty, graphic, and salacious memoir that digs deep into the core of a dysfunctional family, as they find a way to not only cope with each other, but also how to "accept" each other.
The inspiring “from the outhouse to the penthouse” story of Steven's life is recounted in explicit, often gritty detail, as he recalls his childhood on Miami Beach as a bullied, throw-away kid, battling drug addiction, incarceration, and eventual recovery. The one bright spot in his childhood had been the times spent as a preteen with Uncle Butch and his family, a welcome respite from his abusive home life on Miami Beach.
When the weekend visits abruptly ended, Steven blamed himself. He didn’t learn until he was an adult that his “loving uncle” had a secret double life filled with salacious sexual exploits and involvement in stolen car rings.
Facing a lengthy prison term, Butch decided to go underground and live his life incognito as a full-time woman. Years later, Steven received a life-altering call from his sister, telling him about his “new” Aunt Gloria. By then, Steven had won his battle with addiction and destructive behavior, and established a successful career in insurance and real estate. Through his reconciliation with Gloria, Steven learned the truth about how she had to go through years of overcoming her own demons, as together, they embarked on a journey healing deep and painful wounds.
