Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

In Cured, Dr. Rediger digs down to the root causes of illness, showing how to create an environment that sets the stage for healing. He reveals the patterns behind healing and lays out the physical and mental principles associated with recovery: first, we need to physically heal our diet and our immune systems. Next, we need to mentally heal our stress response and our identities. Through rigorous research, Dr. Rediger shows that much of our physical reality is created in our minds. Our perception changes our experience, even to the point of changing our physical bodies.

This is the book that has given thousands of sufferers new hope - a gentle, effective way to find real relief from back pain, without painkillers, without surgery, without spending days on end in bed.
Dr. John Sarno's revolutionary approach to back pain is based on his discovery that tension is the underlying cause of most back problems - leading to an often unrecognized condition called Tension Myositis Syndrome. In this book - the first to explain the psychophysiology, manifestations, and treatment of TMS - you'll find clear steps and sensible advice to help you find relief, prevent future pain...and live life fully once again.

Each of us will know physical pain in our lives, but none of us knows when it will come or how long it will stay. Today as much as 10 percent of the population of the United States suffers from chronic pain. It is more widespread, misdiagnosed, and undertreated than any major disease. While recent research has shown that pain produces pathological changes to the brain and spinal cord, many doctors and patients still labor under misguided cultural notions and outdated scientific dogmas.

Historia
Schizophrenics in the United States currently fare worse than patients in the world’s poorest countries. In Mad in America, medical journalist Robert Whitaker argues that modern treatments for the severely mentally ill are just old medicine in new bottles, and that we as a society are deeply deluded about their efficacy. The widespread use of lobotomies in the 1920s and 1930s gave way in the 1950s to electroshock and a wave of new drugs.

On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within 12 seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong: with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make.

I listened to the entire book. The doctor has a good theory backed by his experienced and I’d like to try his treatments. Big problem,.. he never says what the treatment is!!! I basically listened to a 3 1/2 hour advertisement. My back is killing me! Why are you leaving me hanging with no ending, advice, treatment, or suggestions Dr Sarno? What’s the point of the book!?!?

Insulting
As other reviewer have mentioned, there is absolutely no description of what kind of technique or method he recommends.
The entire book is just anecdotes, and a lot of them are quite insulting. - His theory is basically that your back pain is rooted in emotional tension. And suggests psychotherapy.
He claims that there is no structural abnormality for people with back pain, (which in my case is certainly not true because one can see the structural abnormalities on the MRI very clearly) and is insulting tpäo anyone who has ever been in an accident.
To make matters worse, his anecdotes are filled with stereotypes, such as "the anxious homemaker"....or the "irritable, middle aged career hungry man."

COVERS "WHAT" BUT NOT THE "HOW"
If you are looking for a book that tells you that most pain begins in the brain, and explains what back ache can be , this would be the book. If however, you want to learn about how you can use your mind to overcome pain, there is nothing in this book that covers it. Interestingly enough, even though he rants about meds, he does admit he uses them in severe cases. He also says that if was legal, he would recommend prescribe heroin to treat pain. His anectdote about a witchdoctor curing back pain by sending demons to a chicken and the demons kill the chicken was .....umm...well, what can i say....
