Winner of the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel.

“A great day is upon us. He is coming. The world will be washed away.”

On the wind-battered isle of Altnaharra, off the wildest coast of Scotland, a clan prepares to bring about the end of the world and its imminent rebirth.

The Adder is coming and one of their number will inherit its powers. They all want the honor, but young Eve is willing to do anything for the distinction.

A reckoning beyond Eve’s imagination begins when Chief Inspector Black arrives to investigate a brutal murder and their sacred ceremony goes terribly wrong.

And soon all the secrets of Altnaharra will be uncovered.

“Ward’s skillful weaving of horror and mystery forms a dense, rich tapestry....The play of imagery is as engrossing as the plot twists, making this a rewarding outing from any angle. Horror fans won’t want to miss this.” —Publishers Weekly, STARRED review

"Little Eve is the sort of book that will both surprise and shock you...It’s delightful and disturbing by turns, and almost impossible to put down once you’ve started." —Paste

“Told in dual timelines, Little Eve is a deliciously spooky book, with prose like whispers on the wind. This one is for fans of cult stories (like me) and the gothic (also me), with dynamic characters and intense pseudo-religious psychology.” —Tor.com

Engrossing, enthralling, entrancing.

I listened to this in one day. I couldn't stop. It will rip your heart out and keep you guessing at every turn of the page. There was nothing which pulled me out of the narrative and every loose end was tied up nicely and in a way that made sense. I suspected one of the ending twists from very early on, but I couldn't be sure and the twists and payoff were excellent. All of the characters were well-developed. This is the first time I've read this author and I will definitely be reading more!

Little Eve

This is the 2nd book I've read of Catriona Wards'. The first was "The Last House on Needless Street" which I thoroughly enjoyed. She writes evil little stories that get under your skin and stay with you awhile, like a bad rash that you pick and scratch at for days.
This story of Little Eve is so different from the first book I read of hers, and it is such a disturbing little story... but I had to finish it.
It encompasses many feelings while reading it: shock, disgust, and cheering for the children who were being brainwashed into staying with "Uncle."
It is a story worth reading and I do enjoy the way Catriona Ward writes.

Good story, not so good narrator

The story is interesting, albeit a little long winded. It's a literary gothic mystery with some unexpected twists at the end. Some parts are a bit boring and unnecessary long, reminiscent of her earlier work 'The Girl from Rawblood'. But overall, I enjoyed it and wanted to know where the story would go. The narrator was another one of those who talk so low you have to crank up your volume almost to the max to hear anything. Even with my earbuds in I sometimes had trouble understanding her.

Fantastic!

Great tale, great voice to tell it. Also the musical accompaniment at the end was the perfect touch.

Needs a better narrator.

What I got from the story was interesting, but even at full volume, I was missing entire paragraphs from the narrator's whispery voice. If Looking Glass Sound has the same narrator, I'm canceling the preorder.

I tried but it's tedious worth little payoff. And I'm weird. I like weird things. ❤️d Needless Street. Kind of mad on this one.

Excellent little gothic tale

The atmosphere is palpable in this gothic tale of murder and betrayal and isolation. There are multiple twists and turns I did not see coming. I read the author's other book "The Last House on Needless Street" and though that one is more well known, I thought this one was better. The narrator's soft Scottish burr is lovely.

Keep going

I read some of the negative reviews, but I also know a lot of times negative reviews have nothing to do with the book and more to do with the reading taking something personal or their perception because of it.
Anyways. .. At first it was a bit slow but quickly I was pulled in. You start to realize not is all what it seems. The narrator does sound the same for the different girl's voices but she also says who she is at the time, so it's common sense and you figure out who is who. There's no confusion. The last may be four chapters I literally could not turn it off whether I was driving, walking into the house, doing things.... I just couldn't turn it off. I liked how the story really showed how susceptible our minds are to conditioning. Uncle in the story is basically a cult leader. Limiting The knowledge the girls receive and his word is law. Following that law will give you love and comfort. Small disobedience will give you The shut off of any love and affection and also even physical discipline. We could focus on the negativity but in the end. I do believe it's a story about the strength of a young girl finding what is true. I highly recommend.

Meh…

To some this book reviews is wow and fantastic. I may not be sophisticated and highly intellectual but I know when a certain book bored the shit out of me. Also it may help to read instead of audio. The narration for this is not great. You can not tell if she is eve or Nora or rose or any other characters. She sounds the same for every characters. Ok maybe except Alice. Since Alice is British and not Scottish. Also I have issues with occult, child abused and animals abused. That will shut me down quick on my openness for this book. Not sure how it got all these great reviews and Shirley Jackson award. I don’t recommend it and if I have a choice. I wouldn’t of waste my time on it

What?

I desperately want to love this book, but I cannot understand what the narrator is saying. A combination of the accent and the delivery makes it nearly impossible to hear some words. I have rewound several sections multiple times and still can’t catch things. Too much work but the story itself seems good!
