Acerca de esta escucha
How can you become an “ecological coach”? That is, learn to coach in a manner consistent with the new, evidence-based theory of skill acquisition and refinement, discussed in the bestselling books “How We Learn to Move” and “Learning to Optimize Movement”.
In this, the third book in the series, the focus turns to skill acquisition and development in coaches. Learn to design effective, challenging, and engaging practice environments. Learn to use the Constraints-Led Approach. Use instruction, cueing, and demonstration more effectively. Vary practice difficulty and variability to challenge your athletes at the optimal level. Learn to observe movement to pick up key invariants and the affordances available to your athletes. Incorporate the latest technology and scientific research into your coaching.

How do we go from proficiency to mastery in sports? From average to elite. From having a “lot of moving parts” to being economical and efficient in our movements. From feeling rushed and pressured to slowing time down and acting like you knew what was going to happen all along. From deciding to take the best option available to moving to shape and change the options afforded to us. From building easily disrupted and broken skills to adaptable and even anti-fragile ones, getting stronger through being challenged.

The potential to optimise basketball performance and access large competitive advantages through an evidence-based approach have not been harnessed. Until now.

What are the origins of Brazilian jiujitsu? Is it merely a by-product—a rebel offspring—of judo? What was the nature and content of the art that Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. “Count Koma”, and other Japanese were teaching in the Amazon? Was it judo? Jiujitsu? His own personal fight-tested style, built on a foundation of judo and informed by his dozens and dozens of matches around the world? What was the bridge between the art he learned at the Kodokan and the Brazilian style--a style now practiced by millions worldwide and growing bigger every day--that claims him as its godfather?

Applying theory to real-world practice!
I’ve waited years for this book, and it was worth the wait. I highly recommend that most people start with his previous two books for a deeper understanding of the theoretical principles, but this third book is a great bridge from understanding movement to *coaching*. And for those who already follow Rob’s podcast, this book is like having all your favorite topics bundled in one coherent package, and absolutely current.
I recommend this for those who coach AND of course for those who also develop other coaches. There aren’t a ton of non-linear pedagogy books, but still… I’ve literally read them all and this is now my favorite. And Ron’s voice is already familiar to us, and I’m grateful he quickly got this new book recorded. My husband (also a coach) and I have been listening to it in place of our usual podcast hour (morning coffee on the porch with podcasts).

Constrain to afford.
This is Rob Gray’s best book yet. If you’re a coach in any sport or an athlete that wants to get better, I highly recommend this book as well as his first two books, “How We Learn To Move,” and “How We Learn To Optimize Movement.” If you haven’t read any of them yet, I’m tempted to recommend starting with this book first because I believe it does the best job of explaining why and how to coach or practice from an Ecological Dynamics framework over more traditional approaches. As a mixed martial arts, Muay Thai and Jiu-jitsu gym owner and coach, Rob Gray’s books and podcasts have been an invaluable resource for applying an Ecological Approach for our practice designs.
