A heartwarming romance about a woman who finds true love in a small town, from New York Times bestselling author, Jude Deveraux.

Jocelyn Minton is a woman torn between two worlds. Her mother grew up attending private schools and afternoon teas, but she married the local handyman. After her mother died when Joce was only five years old, her father remarried into his own class, and Joce became an outsider—until she met Edilean Harcourt. Although she was sixty years Joce's senior, Miss Edi was a kindred soul who understood her like no one else ever had.

When Miss Edi passes away, she leaves Joce all her worldly possessions, including an eighteenth-century house and a letter with clues to a mystery that began in 1941. In the letter, Miss Edi also mentions that she has found the perfect man for Joce—a handsome young lawyer. Joce is shocked to learn that the mystery, the house, and the future love of her life are all in Edilean, a small town in Virginia that Miss Edi never told her about. Hurt that the woman who meant so much to her kept so many secrets, Jocelyn moves to this tight-knit village in an attempt to understand the legacy that has been left to her. As she begins to dig into Miss Edi's mystery, she soon discovers some shocking surprises about her family's history and her own future—and she meets a man with his own mysterious past.

These books were out of order and unfortunately have different narrator's. The narrator to this book has the same voice for all the characters, I had to back up a lot because I didn't know who was talking. The narrator can't hold a candle to Davina Porter. To bad she didn't read this one. I hope book 3 has some of the same characters, but from the description it doesn't. It has another narrator change, hope she is better. The best part was the ending, a real tear jerker.

should have been book #2.

What made the experience of listening to Lavender Morning the most enjoyable?

The wittiness of the characters was the most enjoyable.

If you’ve listened to books by Jude Deveraux before, how does this one compare?

Slightly boring in comparison. The romance was implied yet non-existent. It was also sometimes difficult distinguishing the change of characters, because they all sounded alike.

What does Barbara McCulloh bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the quick wit and personalities of the characters.

Any additional comments?

Although Ms Deveraux is one of my favorite authors, this series is not one I would follow. I'd rather the Taggert/Montgomery series.

sweet, innocent, and perfectly suitable for teens

I laughed, cried and fell in love with David and Ettie and their granddaughter and Luke!

Best Deveraux book yet!

Any additional comments?

Let me start by saying that I don't usually read romances, so please take that under advisement. Maybe all romances have goofy dialogue. I chose this story for the title (very nice) and the hints in the synopsis of a historical mystery. Sadly, it turned out that the title wasn't very important in the story line, although I like the idea of lavender cookies. I wonder how they taste. Anyway, the mention of old letters is what really grabbed me. So I didn't enjoy all the silly boy-girl games that went on. But I did like the historical chase and the idea that it impacted the present. Sadly, the story lines I was most interested in - Tess' back story and whatever happened in 1941 - weren't followed up in this novel. I expect they turn up again in another one, but I just can't wade through all the really silly conversations again, so I will pass. Honestly, if I had been reading this book in print I would have just skipped anything in quotes. Too bad - it could have been a great story.

goofy dialogue, interesting premise

admittedly, I wasn't disappointed by the book. however, given that it was a mystery/romance...both aspects left me desiring more. the mystery was wrapped up incredibly quickly and didn't offer much in the way of sleuthing. both romances were pretty "blah". I enjoyed the elements, just wish she'd dove deeper into one of the three possible stories. it's hard to explain without spoilers.

that said, it was a good audiobook that gave me something to pass the time.

I did not care for the narration for this book. She did not change her voice for the different characters and so it was hard to tell who was talking and it made it hard to really get into the story. It would’ve been greatly enhanced had she changed her voice to match the character.

Narrator could do more
