A lush, gothic fantasy from debut author Lyndall Clipstone about monsters and magic, set on the banks of a cursed lake, perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Brigid Kemmerer.

When Violeta Graceling and her younger brother, Arien, arrive at the haunted Lakesedge estate, they expect to find a monster. Leta knows the terrifying rumors about Rowan Sylvanan, who drowned his entire family when he was a boy. But neither the estate nor the monster are what they seem.

As Leta falls for Rowan, she discovers he is bound to the Lord Under, the sinister death god lurking in the black waters of the lake - a creature to whom Leta is inexplicably drawn. Now, to save Rowan - and herself - Leta must confront the darkness in her past, including unraveling the mystery of her connection to the Lord Under.

I was quite intrigued at the blurred for this story. As the story grew my interest in it also grew. It is quite an interesting storyline in the fact that it is somewhat repetitive but still keeps you as a reader interested in the characters and what they are doing. I find there was a lot of martyrdom within the characters of the story, their being almost didn’t matter to themselves. I find that the side characters could’ve been a little bit stronger but I could still see them as individuals throughout the story. There is a second book which I am intrigued to perhaps dive into but I’m not sure if it’s the right type of read for me write this moment after finishing this book. Sometimes stories need to be absorbed properly before knowing if you want to continue on with the storyline. This book was a little dark, so maybe I just need a pallet cleanser before diving into the subject matter again.
