Monsanto, a St. Louis chemical firm that became the world’s largest maker of genetically engineered seeds, merged with German pharma-biotech giant Bayer in 2018 - but its Roundup Ready® seeds, introduced 25 years ago, are still reshaping the farms that feed us. When researchers found trace amounts of the firm’s blockbuster herbicide in breakfast cereal bowls, Monsanto faced public outcry. Award-winning historian Bartow J. Elmore shows how the Roundup story is just one of the troubling threads of Monsanto’s past, many told here and woven together for the first time.

Historia
Directors operate behind the scenes managing actors, establishing a cohesive creative vision, at times literally guiding our eyes with the eye of the camera. But we are often so dazzled by the visions onscreen that it is easy to forget the individual who is off-screen orchestrating the entire production - to say nothing of their having marshaled a script, a studio, and other people's money. David Thomson, in his usual brilliantly insightful way, shines a light on the visionary directors who have shaped modern cinema and, through their work, studies the very nature of film direction.

Goering, Goebbels, Himmler, Heydrich, Hess, Bormann - names synonymous with power and influence in the Third Reich. Perhaps less familiar are Carin, Emmy, Magda, Margarete, Lina, Ilse, and Gerda. These are the women behind the infamous men - complex individuals with distinctive personalities who were captivated by Hitler and whose everyday lives were governed by Nazi ideology. Throughout the rise and fall of Nazism these women loved and lost, raised families, and quarreled with their husbands and each other, all the while jostling for position with the Fuhrer himself.

In the beginning, Earth was an inhospitably alien place—in constant chemical flux, covered with churning seas, crafting its landscape through incessant volcanic eruptions. Amid all this tumult and disaster, life began. The earliest living things were no more than membranes stretched across microscopic gaps in rocks, where boiling hot jets of mineral-rich water gushed out from cracks in the ocean floor. In A (Very) Short History of Life on Earth, Henry Gee zips through the last 4.6 billion years with infectious enthusiasm and intellectual rigor.

Resumen del Editor
"Kingdom of Lies is a brilliant and bold debut, as full of suspense as the best crime thrillers.” (Linda Fairstein, New York Times best-selling author of Blood Oath)
In the tradition of Michael Lewis and Tom Wolfe, a fascinating and frightening behind-the-scenes look at the interconnected cultures of hackers, security specialists, and law enforcement.
A 19-year-old Romanian student stumbles into a criminal ransomware ring in her village. Soon, she is extorting Silicon Valley billionaires for millions - without knowing the first thing about computers.
A veteran cybersecurity specialist has built a deep network of top-notch hackers in one of the world’s largest banks. But then the bank brings in a cadre of ex-military personnel to “help”.
A cynical Russian only leaves his tiny New Jersey apartment to hack sports cars at a high-performance shop in Newark. But he opens his door to a consultant who needs his help.
A hotel doorman in China once served in the People’s Army, stealing intellectual property from American companies. Now, he uses his skills to build up a private side business selling the data he takes from travelers to Shanghai’s commercial center.
Kingdom of Lies follows the intertwined stories of cybercriminals and ethical hackers as they jump from criminal trend to criminal trend, crisis to crisis.
A cybersecurity professional turned journalist, Kate Fazzini illuminates the many lies companies and governments tell us about our security, the lies criminals tell to get ahead, and the lies security leaders tell to make us think they are better at their jobs than they are.
Like Traffic set in the cybercrime world, Kingdom of Lies is as entertaining as it is eye-opening.

Cyber crimes
It takes awhile to get the story out. The author tries to weave together a tale of interesting people lurking around the world, nice criminals. Khristine reads it like a children’s book. Looking at her other narrations, that is her specialty. Thought this was a serious subject, it’s not.
