In 1899 two women from very different backgrounds are about to embark on a journey together - one that will take them from the Old World to the New, from the 19th century into the 20th, and from the comfort and familiarity of England to the rigors of Western Canada, where challenges await at every turn.

The journey begins simply for Kicker Stuart when she leaves her home village to take employment as hostler and farrier at Grindleshire Academy for Young Ladies. But when Kicker falls in love with a teacher, Madelyn Bristow, it radically alters the course of her tranquil life.

Together, the lovers flee the brutality of Madelyn's father and the prejudices of upper crust England in search of freedom to live, and love, as they choose. A journey as much of the heart and soul as of the body, it will find the lovers struggling against the expectations of gender, the oppression of class, and even, at times, each other.

What they find at the end of their journey is not a new Eden, but a land of hope and opportunity that offers them the chance to live out their most cherished dream - a life together.

Beautiful!

What a wonderful story of the epic journey of two young gay women in the latter 19th century. They courageously begin a journey from their birthplace of England to the unknown world of Canada, where they hope to settle in a life where they can be together.
I was swept up into the story and couldn't stop listening; it was so well put together, plus, the narrator did an outstanding job! I wished the book did not have to come to an end - it was a beautiful story!

Outstanding

I so enjoyed and related to this story of a butch and femme in the later 1800's trials and tribulations. Finding their place in the world. Survival, and love in a male dominated society.

So Emotional and Romantic

This wonderful story was doubled in excellence by the brilliant narrator. It was long but I read in quickly, happy that it was long because I didn’t want it to end!

Engaging

Not only is the story well written and engaging, but the narration is even more so! The narrator does a fantastic job getting into the part of each character. You know exactly which character is speaking with the way the narrator portrays each of their different voices. The story itself has plenty of love, suspense and adventure to you engaged and wondering what will come next! Truly, a fantastic tale!

Wonderful story

I was so invested in this story beginning in the late 1800 s in England that I started before I went to sleep and listened the entire next day.
The narration was great. The romance between the 2 MCs seemed so unlikely but as the they began their life in newly developing Canada the relationship became more believable.

It’s good you won’t regret the credit.

I don’t really like historical set books but this one was excellent. Great narration with all the different characters and the story is wonderfully sweet.

Kicker’s Journey

WOW!!! This was a wonderful book to get lost in! Thank you Lois Hart. Please keep writing, it would be wonderful to have more LGBTQ historical fiction to read. Thanks to Amy Landon also for disappearing into each character so convincingly that the story came alive.

Historical Romance

Kicker Stuart leaves her home village to become a hostler and farrier at Grindleshire Academy for young ladies. Teacher Madelyn Bristow is starting her first year at the academy and entreats Kicker to teach her how to ride. As they grow closer Kicker realizes she is different from other women and wants Madelyn with all her heart.

Together they flew the oppression of Maddie’s father and English society. Fleeing to Canada and a seeking a new life together they find not an Eden but hope and opportunity.

A magnificent saga in a world of grueling work and a hard life. A realistic depiction of a love that spans continents and oceans. Great narration.

Gorgeous and epic love story

Now one of my new favorite love stories! Mature emotions and cinematic scenery, as much as an audiobook can be. Looking forward to listening to other stories by this new-to-me Canadian author.
Highly recommended for the beautifully spun and sincerely moving tale and also for the excellent narration!

A Delightful Trek, Back, in Time

Finally, here is a version, of Howl's Moving Castle, for gay women. Those who like TV shows, like Outlander, Violet Evergarden, or 1899, or even books, like Ulysses, will like this carefully-written, period piece. I love this story.
