A great American family

Very well written bio about perhaps the most amazing industrialist ever born! The book cogently encapsulates the dichotomy of the Rockefeller fortune - rigorous, scrupulous and perhaps even illegal business practices in accumulating unparalleled wealth contrasted with a philanthropic fervor that has benefitted millions for over a century. I was unaware of the true magnitude of the Rockefeller magnificence - incredible advances in medicine and education and the establishment of hundreds of thousands of acres of preserved public lands. All of us must be judged by the totality of our works and actions - I came away believing that we all owe a debt of gratitude to this historic American family! I'm now listening J. R. MacGregor book.

Rockefeller Biography worth a look

I just finished listening this book. Very informative and eye opening. John Rockefeller was not perfect, and was at times a ruthless businessman, but he was also an INCREDIBLE Philanthropist, who gave Millions to charity. In the end, America benefited from the contributions Rockefeller made in advancing society in the late 19th and early twentieth century. If your interested in American Business History this book is worthwhile.

What I find amazing

What I find amazing is how relevant this book is to today's political world. Nothing has changed! When it comes to politics and big money, this book reveals what happened then, in the late 1800's and how history repeats itself.

Succinct

Yet another succinct precis of an interesting life from J. R. MacGregor .
The story includes mentions of his unpopularity and virtual monopoly - but he does not seem to have broken any laws or indulged in 'strong-arm' tactics other than commercial competition.
There's a mild scattering of grammatical glitches.
Would have liked to have learned more about Rockefeller's methods: just what did he do with the raw oil …. how was it processed, and the technology and distribution...business methods employed, etc.

And an amazing book. If you love business and want to understand human nature and the true meaning of wealth this is the preeminent book on the subject.

Extraordinarily good biography

I am late to add my 2 cents to "Titan's" many reviews but I think it better cheered late then not at all. J. R. MacGregor's JD Rockefeller biography is superb in its depth and implications. The boy, the man, the business man, the maker of empire, the villain, and the extraordinarily far sighted philanthropist; his legacy is explored in fascinating depth.

J. R. MacGregor The Original Titan as an altogether different character then I had previously imagined. The strength and character of JD Rockefeller is truly astounding no matter if you love or hate the man. J. R. MacGregor provides the record and evidences to properly posit your opinion of JD Rockefeller. For me, I give JD the highest marks in genius, ingenuity and persistence of character witnessed in a time when there were no rules or comparable non-nation state paradigms to build the truly enormous enterprise.
This is long, superbly enjoyable listen. I have gifted it to several associates.

I bought this for my husband

I bought this for my husband as he loves listening about successful businessmen of all sorts. At first he thought it would be boring, but before he listen it, we happened to take a trip to Newport, RI and did a tour of the mansions. That got his interest peaked, and he was really excited to listen it. He thought it was hard to get into, but the further he got, the more he liked.

Founded the modern multi-national

John D Rockefeller, Sr. founded the modern multi-national conglomerate and. through his charitable giving, both modern medical research and modern medical training. In short, he was the Bill Gates of the last century.
