Whispered secrets about her parents’ past take on new urgency for Chariline as she pays one last visit to the land of her forefathers, the ancient kingdom of Cush.

Raised as an orphan by her aunt, Chariline has only been told a few pieces of her parents’ tragic love story. Her beautiful dark skin is proof that her father was Cushite, but she knows nothing else. While visiting her grandfather before his retirement as the Roman official in the queen’s court, Chariline overhears that her father is still alive, and discovering his identity becomes her obsession. Both her grandfather and the queen have reasons for keeping this secret, however, and forbid her quest. So when her only clues lead to Rome, Chariline sneaks on the ship of a merchant trusted by friends.

Theo is shocked to discover a stowaway on board his vessel and determines to be rid of her as soon as possible. But drawn in by Chariline’s story, he feels honor-bound to see her safely to shore, especially when it appears someone may be willing to kill for the truth she seeks.

In this transformative tale of historical fiction, best-selling author Tessa Afshar brings to life the kingdom of Cush and the Roman Empire, introducing listeners to a fascinating world filled with gripping adventure, touching romance, and a host of lovable characters - including some they may recognize from the biblical book of Acts.

I was so excited about this book, that I pre ordered it and sat with bated breath for the release date. I was sorely disappointed with the naration though. Why oh why did the narrator sound like that! It was painful listening to. I was totally annoyed because it's such a beautiful story! I am a huge fan of Tessa Afshar. I listen to each of her books several times. This one however I could not endure. Please Tessa, this book deserves a recording do over.

Wonderful Story Awful narration!

I love this author but I struggled to finish this audio book. The narrator makes the main character sound like a 4 year old through out the story. I will not listen to anything else this narrator is involved with.

The Narrator is unbearable 😫

I had not read books from this author but look forward to reading more. Some of female voices done by narrator were a little shrill and annoying but narrator sure made the transition from one voice to another very smooth.

great story of redemption and intrigue

If you've listened to Thief of Corinth, you might be disappointed with this narrator. She even mispronounces some of the character's names from the previous book. The book itself is great! I really wish they would just have Rendah Heywood narrate them all.

Not the best narration

I was able to stick with it, because the story was well written and interesting. But I almost returned it several times because of the narrator. She felt the need to do some sort of Israeli accent with all the characters. it was so annoying. I'm sure she worked really hard to do so, but her regular voice was nice and would have been preferred.

Story great; not a fan of this narrator
